Ale co je to “to“, co uskutečňuje Boží vůli nebo se jí protiví, pakliže “já“ je prázdným průsečíkem, který je navíc zcela determinován všemi těmi zmíněnými vlivy? Možná to nějak souvisí s harmonií celé té sítě, možná je tedy celá ta záležitost vlastně estetická v onom antickém smyslu, kdy Dobro a Krása spolu souvisí."

Lewis ve svém deníku také píše, že o Bohu nemůžeme vědět nic a dokonce i naše otázky týkající se Boha jsou nesmyslné. Proč? Je to jako kdyby se vás někdo od narození slepý zeptal: "Je zelená barva horká, nebo studená?" Tohle ne. "Je dlouhá, nebo krátká?" Tohle ne. "Je sladká, nebo kyselá?" Tohle ne. "Je kulatá, oválná, nebo čtverhranná?" Tohle ne, tohle ne. Nevidomá osoba nemá žádná slova, žádné pojmy pro barvu, o které nemá žádnou představu, o které nemá tušení, kterou nikdy nezažila. Můžete s nimi o tom mluvit jen s pomocí analogií. Ať se zeptá jakkoli, vy můžete říci jen: "Tohle ne." C.S. Lewis o tom kdesi píše, že to je stejné, jako kdybyste se ptali, kolik minut má žlutá barva. Všichni by možná vzali tu otázku vážně, diskutovali by o tom a přeli by se. Jeden by se dopracoval k výsledku, že ve žluté barvě je 25 mrkví, a druhý by zase tvrdil: "Kdepak, sedmnáct brambor!" A už by byli v sobě. Tohle ne!
Konečnou fází v poznávání Boha je tedy poznat, že nevíme. Naše největší neštěstí je, že toho víme příliš mnoho. Tedy myslíme si, že víme, to je naše neštěstí. Proto nemůžeme nic objevit. Tomáš Akvinský (byl to nejen teolog, ale také skvělý filozof) nejednou řekl: "Veškeré úsilí lidské mysli nedokáže vyčerpat podstatu jediné mouchy."
