Life in the dark dune spots of Mars: a testable hypothesis - ResearchGate
    http://www.researchgate.net/...n/252158441_Life_in_the_dark_dune_spots_of_Mars_a_testable_hypothesis

ABSTRACT: This chapter presents one of the very rare exobiological hypotheses. The main thesis is that there could be life in the dark dune spots (DDSs) of the southern polar region of Mars, at latitudes between –60° and –80°. The spots have a characteristic annual morphological cycle and it is suspected that liquid water forms in them every year. We propose that a consortium of simple organisms (similar to bacteria) comes to life each year, driven by sunlight absorbed by the photosynthetic members of the consortium. A crucial feature of the proposed habitat is that life processes take place only under the cover of water ice/frost/snow. By the time this frost disappears from the dunes, the putative microbes, named Mars surface organisms (MSOs) must revert to a dormant state. The hypothesis has been worked out in considerable detail, it has not been convincingly refuted so far, and it is certainly testable by available scientific methods. We survey some of the history of, the logic behind, the testable predictions of, and the main challenges to the DDS-MSO hypothesis.

Landing Site Proposals for Next Mars Landers: Possibility to Explore Astrobiology Relevant Locations in the Souther Polar Region of Mars - 45th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference (2014)
    http://www.hou.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2014/pdf/2416.pdf

Eearlier the Hungarian Mars Astrobiology Group proposed the MSO-DDS hypothesis which supposed that living organisms may couse the darkening of frost cover at Polar Regions of Mars. Regardless the possible hypothetic living organisms, these sites are still interesting because of the conditions annually favorably for the ephemeral occurrence of microscopic liquid water. Several exciting landing sites at Southern Polar Region frosted fields, like the Pityusa Patera, the Inca City, and other craters in the subpolar belt are discussed below. The main goal is these sites are suitable for the ephemeral appearance of microscopic liquid water, and in theory even for hypotheticallyorganisms too, 1-3 mm below the soil surface (tens of centimeters below the frost) are there existing or not.

Geyser (Mars) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geyser_(Mars)

    Hypothetical biological origin

A team of Hungarian scientists propose that the dark dune spots and channels may be colonies of photosynthetic Martian microorganisms, which over-winter beneath the ice cap, and as the sunlight returns to the pole during early spring, light penetrates the ice, the microorganisms photosynthesise and heat their immediate surroundings. A pocket of liquid water, which would normally evaporate instantly in the thin Martian atmosphere, is trapped around them by the overlying ice. As this ice layer thins, the microorganisms show through grey. When it has completely melted, they rapidly desiccate and turn black surrounded by a grey aureole. The Hungarian scientists think that even a complex sublimation process is insufficient to explain the formation and evolution of the dark dune spots in space and time. Since their discovery, fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke promoted these formations as deserving of study from an astrobiological perspective.
