Do You See a Mountain or a Crater in This Picture?
    http://www.universetoday.com/118616/do-you-see-a-mountain-or-a-crater-in-this-picture/

Thanks to our brains, this is a common illusion! Depending on the angle of the Sun when the picture was taken, images of craters taken from overhead (i.e. from orbit) may appear to be a mountain. Here on Earth, we’re used to seeing sunlight coming from overhead, and our brain interprets what we see with the assumption that the sunlight *must* always come from above. Satellite photos of terrain, however usually only show shadows when the light source is nearly horizontal with the surface.

There’s an easy fix for this illusion: flip the image over so it appears the sunlight is coming from above.

This Is the Insane Metallic World NASA Wants to Explore Next
    http://gizmodo.com/this-is-the-insane-metallic-world-nasa-wants-to-explore-1734047272?

NASA announced the finalists for its next round of planetary explorations. There were the usual suspects—Venus, Jupiter’s asteroids—and, then, there was this: An asteroid, composed almost entirely of (possibly magnetic) metal, with a crust literally beaten away by interstellar collisions, named Psyche. Pardon?

If you haven’t heard much about Psyche yet, there’s a good reason: We don’t know very much about it. But the things we do know are, in a word, bizarre—starting with where it came from.

NASA announces five Discovery proposals selected for further study | The Planetary Society
    http://www.planetary.org/blogs/casey-dreier/2015/09301336-discovery-downselect.html

A total of five planetary mission concepts -- three targeted at asteroids, two at Venus -- will move to the next stage of the competition: a year-long process of detailed hardware design, cost analysis, and science planning. Next year, NASA will choose one of these mission concepts to launch no later than 2021.

This is how Adobe and NASA photoshop the stars | The Verge
    http://www.theverge.com/2015/9/29/9413807/adobe-nasa-photoshop-stars

Even the wonders of the Universe need a touch-up every now and again. Although we marvel at pictures sent back to Earth from equipment like the Hubble Space Telescope or the Curiosity rover on Mars, there's a lot of work done on these images before they're published. As this blog post from Adobe explains, sometimes it's mostly just a case of stitching pictures to create a panorama (as with transmissions from Curiosity), but other times the process is more complicated.
