    DPS 2015: A little science from Rosetta, beyond perihelion | The Planetary Society

    Division for Planetary Sciences meeting was my first opportunity to see science results from the Rosetta mission since comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko passed through perihelion on August 13. Here are my scattered notes from DPS sessions on Rosetta.

    Animace složená z 29 raw snímků (kam. NAC) pořízená při přeletu relativně blízko kolem měsíce Tethys (o průměru 1 065 km) z
    11. listopadu. Průlet nebyl součástí scénáře plánovaných přiblížení k Tethys, tým jen využil možnost detailně nasnímkovat povrch
    tohoto satelitu v rámci přiblížení k měsíci Titan, který probíhá dnes (T-114).

    NASA’s Cassini Finds Monstrous Ice Cloud in Titan’s South Polar Region

    New observations made near the south pole of Titan by NASA’s Cassini spacecraft add to the evidence
    that winter comes in like a lion on this moon of Saturn. Scientists have detected a monstrous new cloud
    of frozen compounds in the moon’s low- to mid-stratosphere – a stable atmospheric region above
    the troposphere, or active weather layer.

    Astronomers have spied a cold world three times as distant from the Sun as Pluto.

    The unexcitingly-named V774104 is at least 500km across and the most faraway dwarf planet yet spotted. Operators of the Japanese Subaru telescope will now track its movements in hopes to learn more about the behavior of such distant bodies, which tend to have strange orbits.

    Models for Solar System formation suggest that such objects were probably not created in these weird, eccentric orbits. One explanation is that they have been perturbed gravitationally and pulled on to their strange trajectories by a passing planet - perhaps one that was expelled from our Solar System early in its history. Some scientists even speculate that such objects could have been stolen from a star that formed from the same "nursery" of gas and dust as our Sun 4.6 billion years ago.

    It's about 3/4 as far out as the Voyager probe, which may or may not have left the solar system, depending on your point of view.
