Poor visibility; weather again unsettled today. Surreal rocks and riven lowlands, valleys fog-shrouded. Frightening depths, and emptiness. Rarity of air is noticeable. What are you looking for in this hostile stretch?

A meditation about the pursuit of an idea; about obstacles, struggle and failure along the way.

The constant transformation of the landscape shapes and their surfaces is based on generated motion sequences of drifting and constantly transforming surface structures, which were created with a custom generative software tool.

Computational reaction-diffusion systems mimic chemical pattern formation in nature. A mixture of two or more chemicals that react with each other and have different diffusion rates forms macroscopic patterns in time and space of chemical concentration. The chemical mixture stays in a continual flux and therefore far from equilibrium.

Alan Turing was the first one who proposed reaction-diffusion systems as a theoretical idea to explain biological morphogenesis. It demonstrates how breaking and pattern formation can arise out of a homogeneous, uniform state.

The Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction is a special non-equilibrium system that works as a chemical oscillator as it cycles through its different states in autocatalytic fashion. If unmixed the diffusing chemicals spread and cause spirals to emerge and grow.

Sakurako Shimizu is a Japanese artist, curator and designer of conceptual jewelry based in Brooklyn, NY.

Sakurako has created a line of jewelry that integrates audio waveforms into the pieces via laser etching and calls it the Waveform Series. The really cool thing about them is that the waveforms are made from actual recordings such as yawns, church bells, giggles and someone saying “I do” (of course this one is for the wedding bands).
