    A billion pixels, a billion stars - physicsworld.com
    http://physicsworld.com/cws/article/indepth/2016/sep/08/a-billion-pixels-a-billion-stars
The Gaia spacecraft is conducting the most ambitious and thorough census of our galaxy ever attempted,
gathering data on 100,000 stars every hour. With the mission’s first major data release due this month,
Gerry Gilmore and Floor van Leeuwen explain how the spacecraft works and assess its likely impact on
    the field of astrophysics.

In a new paper published in Physical Review Letters, physicists Yu-Sheng Liu, David McKeen, and Gerald A. Miller at the University of Washington
in Seattle have hypothesized the existence of a new particle that looks very enticing because it could simultaneously solve two important problems:
the proton radius puzzle and a discrepancy in muon anomalous magnetic moment measurements that differ significantly from standard model predictions.

Hypothetical new particle could solve two major problems in particle physics

New research shines startling light on star systems that host hundreds of black holes
Ripples in fabric of space-time? Hundreds of undiscovered black holes: New research shines startling light on star systems that host hundreds of black holes -- ScienceDaily
    https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/09/160907215155.htm

Computer simulations of a spherical collection of stars known as 'NGC 6101' reveal that it contains hundreds of black holes,
until now thought impossible. Recent observations already found black hole candidates in similar systems, with this research
enabling astrophysicists to map black holes in other clusters. These systems could be the cradle of gravitational wave emission,
'ripples' in the fabric of space-time.

Rosetta's dust-analysing COSIMA (COmetary Secondary Ion Mass Analyser) instrument has made the first unambiguous detection of solid
organic matter in the dust particles ejected by Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, in the form of complex carbon-bearing molecules.

Reconciling dwarf galaxies with dark matter
    http://phys.org/news/2016-09-dwarf-galaxies-dark.html
Dwarf galaxies are enigmas wrapped in riddles. Although they are the smallest galaxies, they represent some of the biggest mysteries
about our universe. While many dwarf galaxies surround our own Milky Way, there seem to be far too few of them compared with standard
cosmological models, which raises a lot of questions about the nature of dark matter and its role in galaxy formation.

New theoretical modeling work from Andrew Wetzel, who holds a joint fellowship between Carnegie and Caltech, offers the most accurate
predictions to date about the dwarf galaxies in the Milky Way's neighborhood. Wetzel achieved this by running the highest-resolution
and most-detailed simulation ever of a galaxy like our Milky Way. His findings, published by The Astrophysical Journal Letters, help
to resolve longstanding debates about how these dwarf galaxies formed.

A team from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, has been selected to develop a new,
third-generation facility science instrument for the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, SOFIA.

The principal investigator, Samuel Harvey Moseley will lead the team to develop the High Resolution Mid-InfrarEd Spectrometer (HIRMES).
The team consists of co-investigators from Space Dynamics Lab, Precision Cryogenic Systems, Inc., University of Michigan, University of
Maryland, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Johns Hopkins University, Space Telescope Science Institute, Cornell University and

There are at least 100-to-200 billion (lower limit) to ten trillion planets planets in our Milky Way...

...With at least 200 billion galaxies out there (and possibly even more), we’re very likely talking about a Universe filled with around
10^24 planets, or, for those of you who like it written out, around 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 planets in our observable Universe.
