There are at least 100-to-200 billion (lower limit) to ten trillion planets planets in our Milky Way...

...With at least 200 billion galaxies out there (and possibly even more), we’re very likely talking about a Universe filled with around
10^24 planets, or, for those of you who like it written out, around 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 planets in our observable Universe.

Astronomers observe outburst of comet 15P/Finlay
    http://phys.org/news/2016-09-astronomers-outburst-comet-15pfinlay.html
A Jupiter-family comet, designated 15P/Finlay, has experienced two large-scale outbursts during its perihelion passage at the end of 2014
and the start of 2015. The latter was observed by a team of astronomers, led by Masateru Ishiguro of the Seoul National University in South Korea,
offering a rare glimpse into the physical properties of cometary nuclei. The results of these observations are published Sept. 3 on the arXiv server.

The Milky Way’s Heart May Have Stopped Forming Stars | IFLScience
    http://www.iflscience.com/space/the-milky-ways-heart-may-have-stopped-forming-stars/
The closer you get to the center of the galaxy, the more crowded it becomes with stars, at least until reaching the black hole at its core.
However, a survey of the Milky Way’s inner reaches suggests there is a near-complete shortage of young stars around the central hub, throwing
a major query into our view of galactic evolution, and how things may one day look.

Cepheid variables are an exceptionally valuable tool in understanding the universe. These supergiant stars pulse in brightness on a regular
cycle related to how much light they emit on average. By measuring the length of a Cepheid’s cycle, it is possible to work out how bright
it truly is, enabling us to determine its distance. This property has allowed us to measure the scale of our own and nearby galaxies.

Rare Fossil Relic of Early Milky Way Discovered W. M. Keck Observatory
    http://www.keckobservatory.org/recent/entry/rare_fossil_relic_of_early_milky_way_discovered
A fossilized remnant of the early Milky Way harboring stars of hugely different ages has been discovered by an international team of astronomers.
This stellar system located in the Galactic Bulge has the appearance of a globular cluster, but it is like no other cluster known. It contains stars
remarkably similar to the most ancient stars in the Milky Way but also a significant population of young stars, thus bridging the gap in understanding
between our galaxy's past and its present. The research presents a possible route for astronomers to unravel the mysteries of galaxy formation, and
offers an unrivaled view into the complicated history of the Milky Way. The findings are being published in The Astrophysical Journal today.
