Pulsations detected in a hot, helium-atmosphere white dwarf
    http://phys.org/news/2016-12-pulsations-hot-helium-atmosphere-white-dwarf.html

Astronomers have recently discovered non-radial oscillations in a hot, helium-atmosphere white dwarf designated PG 0112+104.
The newly detected 11 independent pulsation modes in this white dwarf could be essential for researchers testing the radial
differential rotation and internal compositional stratification of highly evolved stellar remnants. The findings were
presented in a paper published Dec. 22 on the arXiv pre-print server.

Last 5 Sept. 2016, asteroid (17473) Freddiemercury has been officially named by the International Astronomical Union after Freddie Mercury,
the lead vocalist and co-principal songwriter of the epic rock band Queen. It was announced on the occasion of the 70th birthday of Freddie.

Concentric rings found in the debris disk of a young nearby star
    http://phys.org/news/2016-12-debris-disk-young-nearby-star.html

An international team of researchers reports the discovery of a series of concentric rings in the debris disk around a young nearby star known as HIP 73145.
These unusual substructures could provide new details about the evolution of circumstellar disks around young stars. The findings were presented in a paper
    published Dec. 22 on arXiv.org.

Located some 400 light years away, HIP 73145 (also known as HD 131835) is a 15-million-year-old star with a spectral type of A2IV. It belongs to the Upper
Centaurus Lupus (UCL) moving group, which is part of the Scorpius–Centaurus association. The star is about 70 percent more massive than the sun and has
a radius of 1.38 solar radii. Importantly, HIP 73145 is known to host a debris disk with a radius of approximately 96 AU.

Wait a moment: 2016 goes a little longer thanks to a leap second
    https://theconversation.com/wait-a-moment-2016-goes-a-little-longer-thanks-to-a-leap-second-70583

To the time-poor of the world: take heart, for 2016 is a generous year. Not only were you granted a leap day on 29 February,
you will soon score a New Year’s Eve countdown bonus, a leap second, to hold off 2017 for a final sip or regret.

Whereas leap years add a day to align the calendar with the seasons, leap seconds align our everyday clocks with the Sun’s
position in the sky, that is, with the Earth’s rotation.

Currently our planet takes roughly 86,400.00183 seconds (on average) to turn, instead of the expected 86,400 seconds you get
by multiplying 24 hours by 60 minutes by 60 seconds. This may not sound like a great difference, but it amounts to a full
second every 18 months. If left unchecked, it would become noticeable over time, and ultimately become problematic.

    http://www.forbes.com/...exotic-geology-unfortunately-nobody-will-be-there-to-study-it/#675fa76e1f68

The end of the world may comes slowly, but it´s inevitable. Our sun, exhausting the hydrogen fuel of the core,
will successively burn the outer layers and doing so becoming hotter and expanding in size. In estimated 7.59
billion years a red giant will engulf the earth or whatever is still left over of the once blue planet.

Life on earth will face quite some challenges until then. In 200 million years the modern continents will collide
to form a supercontinent named Pangaea Ultima. According to computer simulations such a supercontinent will display
an extreme climate. The interior will be covered by a desert with a mean temperature of 111°F (44°C). The coastline
will be hit by strong storms, fueled by the energy accumulated in the worldwide ocean surrounding Pangaea Ultima.
Large areas of thick continental crust act also as sort of thermal insulator, the heat below the supercontinent
will feed large volcanic eruptions, breaking the supercontinent apart and forming single continents again.

Astronomers Seeking Planet 9 Hope To Soon Catch A Glimpse
Astronomers Seeking Planet 9 Hope To Soon Catch A Glimpse : The Two-Way : NPR
    http://www.npr.org/...2016/12/29/507382675/astronomers-seeking-planet-9-hope-to-soon-catch-a-glimpse

On the top of Hawaii's Mauna Kea mountain Thursday, astronomers will point the large Subaru Telescope toward
a patch of sky near the constellation of Orion, looking for an extremely faint object moving slowly through space.

If they find what they're looking for, it will be one of the most important astronomical discoveries in more than
a century: a new planet in our solar system.

Technically, a new planet hasn't been discovered since Neptune was spotted in 1846. Pluto, discovered in 1930, was
demoted to "dwarf planet" a decade ago. If a new planet is found, it will be the new Planet Nine.

Scott Sheppard of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, D.C., will be among the astronomers poring
over the pictures taken by Subaru to see if one provides a glimpse of the planet.

Internal debris may be causing problem with Mars rover’s drill – Spaceflight Now
    http://spaceflightnow.com/2016/12/29/internal-debris-may-be-causing-problem-with-mars-rovers-drill/

Engineers suspect a piece of foreign object debris may be intermittently stalling a motor needed to place the Curiosity
Mars rover’s drill bit onto rocks, and the robot’s ground team is assessing the source of the potential contamination.

More importantly, Curiosity project manager Jim Erickson said, engineers are spending the holidays crunching data from
a series of diagnostic tests conducted in recent weeks to analyze the drill’s behavior and determine a possible fix.

News | NASA's NEOWISE Mission Spies One Comet, Maybe Two
    http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?feature=6712

NASA's NEOWISE mission has recently discovered some celestial objects traveling through our neighborhood, including one
on the blurry line between asteroid and comet. Another--definitely a comet--might be seen with binoculars through next week.

An object called 2016 WF9 was detected by the NEOWISE project on Nov. 27, 2016. It's in an orbit that takes it on a scenic
tour of our solar system. At its farthest distance from the sun, it approaches Jupiter's orbit. Over the course of 4.9 Earth-
years, it travels inward, passing under the main asteroid belt and the orbit of Mars until it swings just inside Earth's own
    orbit. After that, it heads back toward the outer solar system. Objects in these types of orbits have multiple possible origins;
it might once have been a comet, or it could have strayed from a population of dark objects in the main asteroid belt.
