"Nothing has really been ruled out yet […] but taken on its own, a lack of infrared is pretty interesting. It would imply that whatever material is blocking the star is either cold or below the threshhold of what the instrumentation can detect. That would be a strike against a warm cloud of dust or like(?) a debris disc around a young star. But that's never really been on the table to begin with…"

Astronomers Find Planet Hotter Than Most Stars
A newly discovered Jupiter-like world is so hot, it’s being vaporized by its own star.

With a dayside temperature of more than 7,800 degrees Fahrenheit (4,600 Kelvin), KELT-9b is a planet that is hotter than most stars. But its blue A-type star, called KELT-9, is even hotter -- in fact, it is probably unraveling the planet through evaporation.

"This is the hottest gas giant planet that has ever been discovered," said Scott Gaudi.

KELT-9b is 2.8 times more massive than Jupiter, but only half as dense. Scientists would expect the planet to have a smaller radius, but the extreme radiation from its host star has caused the planet's atmosphere to puff up like a balloon.

Hubble's Tale of Two Exoplanets: Nature vs. Nurture
Is it a case of nature versus nurture when it comes to two "cousin" exoplanets? In a unique experiment, scientists used NASA's Hubble Space Telescope to study two "hot Jupiter" exoplanets. Because these planets are virtually the same size and temperature, and orbit around nearly identical stars at the same distance, the team hypothesized that their atmospheres should be alike. What they found surprised them.

"What we're seeing in looking at the two atmospheres is that they're not the same. One planet—WASP-67 b—is cloudier than the other—HAT-P-38 b. We don't see what we're expecting, and we need to understand why we find this difference," said lead researcher Giovanni Bruno.

The team used Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 to look at the planets' spectral fingerprints, which measure chemical composition. "The effect that clouds have on the spectral signature of water allows us to measure the amount of clouds in the atmosphere," Bruno said. "More clouds mean that the water feature is reduced." The teams found that for WASP-67 b there are more clouds at the altitudes probed by these measurements.

"This tells us that there had to be something in their past that is changing the way these planets look," said Bruno.

Sepsal jsem v poslední době pár článků o několika planetkách očekávajících návštěvu ze Země:

V blízkozemní oblasti jsou to dva balvany - Ryugu a Bennu - k nimž už příští rok dorazí japonská respektive americká sonda.

    --

    Hubble "Traps" a Vermin Galaxy
The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope is famous for its jaw-dropping snapshots of the cosmos. At first glance this Picture of the Week appears to be quite the opposite, showing just a blur of jagged spikes, speckled noise, and weird, clashing colors — but once you know what you are looking at, images like this one are no less breathtaking.

This shows a distant galaxy — visible as the smudge to the lower right — as it begins to align with and pass behind a star sitting nearer to us within the Milky Way. This is an event known as a transit. The star is called HD 107146, and it sits at the center of the frame. Its light has been blocked in this image to make its immediate surroundings and the faint galaxy visible — the position of the star is marked with a green circle.

The concentric orange circle surrounding HD 107146 is a circumstellar disk — a disk of debris orbiting the star. In the case of HD 107146 we see the disk face-on. As this star very much resembles our sun, it is an interesting scientific target to study: its circumstellar disk could be analogous to the asteroids in our Solar System and the Kuiper belt.

Go No.2, good weather forecast 60%.

SpaceX is targeting launch of its eleventh Commercial Resupply Services mission (CRS-11) from Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, Florida on Saturday, June 3 at 5:07 p.m. EDT or 21:07 UTC (23:07 CEST)

The CRS-11 mission will be the first reflight of a Dragon spacecraft and will mark the 100th launch from historic LC-39A at Kennedy Space Center. Following stage separation, the first stage of Falcon 9 will attempt to land at SpaceX’s Landing Zone 1 (LZ-1) at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida.

The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) has done it again, detecting gravitational waves rippling away from a cosmic collision between a pair of black holes. Only this time, the pair met around 3 billion light-years away.

This is the third time the observatory has successfully measured such an event, but just when you think you've seen it all before, this collision comes with a literal twist – at least one of the black holes seems to be spinning in an unusual direction.

    Halos in Martian Sandstone
Pale zones called "halos" border bedrock fractures visible in this 2015 image from NASA's Curiosity Mars rover which has been darkened (a previously released image can be seen here). Measurements overlaid on the image offer a sense of scale for the size of these fractures. The rover team determined that the halos are rich in silica, a clue to the duration of wet environmental conditions long ago.

(The location is on the lower slope of Mars' Mount Sharp, along the rover's path between "Marias Pass" and "Bridger Basin." In this region, the rover has found fracture zones to be associated with rock compositions enriched in silica, relative to surrounding bedrock.)
