Chris Hedges: The Cost of Resistance - scheerpost.com
    https://scheerpost.com/2020/09/22/chris-hedges-the-cost-of-resistance/

Two of the rebels I admire most, Julian Assange, the WikiLeaks publisher, and Roger Hallam, the co-founder of Extinction Rebellion, are in jail in Britain. That should not be surprising. You can measure the effectiveness of resistance by the fury of the response. Julian courageously exposed the lies, deceit, war crimes and corruption of the ruling imperial elites. Roger has helped organized the largest acts of mass civil disobedience in British history, shutting down parts of London for weeks, in a bid to wrest power from a ruling class that has done nothing, and will do nothing, to halt the climate emergency and our death march to mass extinction.

The governing elites, when truly threatened, turn the rule of law into farce. Dissent becomes treason. They use the state mechanisms of control – intelligence agencies, police, courts, black propaganda and a compliant press that acts as their echo chamber, along with the jails and prisons, not only to marginalize and isolate rebels, but to psychologically and physically destroy them. The list of rebels silenced or killed by ruling elites runs in a direct line from Socrates to the Haitian resistance leader Toussaint L’Ouverture, who led the only successful slave revolt in human history and died in a frigid French prison cell of malnutrition and exhaustion, to the imprisonment of the socialist Eugene V. Debs, whose health was also broken in a federal prison. Rebel leaders from the 1960s, including Mumia Abu Jamal, Sundiata Acoli, Kojo Bomani Sababu, Mutulu Shakur and Leonard Peltier, remain, decades later, in U.S. prisons. Muslim activists, including those who led the charity The Holy Land Foundation and Syed Fahad Hashmi, were arrested, often at the request of Israel, after the hysteria following 9/11, and given tawdry show trials. They also remain incarcerated.

Melting Antarctic ice will raise sea level by 2.5 metres – even if Paris climate goals are met, study finds | Environment | The Guardian
    https://www.theguardian.com/...ea-level-by-25-metres-even-if-paris-climate-goals-are-met-study-finds

Melting of the Antarctic ice sheet will cause sea level rises of about two and a half metres around the world, even if the goals of the Paris agreement are met, research has shown.

The melting is likely to take place over a long period, beyond the end of this century, but is almost certain to be irreversible, because of the way in which the ice cap is likely to melt, the new model reveals.

Even if temperatures were to fall again after rising by 2C (3.6F), the temperature limit set out in the Paris agreement, the ice would not regrow to its initial state, because of self-reinforcing mechanisms that destabilise the ice,

    ...

The hysteresis of the Antarctic Ice Sheet
    https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-020-2727-5

So far, we are lacking a comprehensive stability analysis of the Antarctic Ice Sheet for different amounts of global warming. Here we show that the Antarctic Ice Sheet exhibits a multitude of temperature thresholds beyond which ice loss is irreversible. Consistent with palaeodata2 we find, using the Parallel Ice Sheet Model3,4,5, that at global warming levels around 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, West Antarctica is committed to long-term partial collapse owing to the marine ice-sheet instability. Between 6 and 9 degrees of warming above pre-industrial levels, the loss of more than 70 per cent of the present-day ice volume is triggered, mainly caused by the surface elevation feedback. At more than 10 degrees of warming above pre-industrial levels, Antarctica is committed to become virtually ice-free. The ice sheet’s temperature sensitivity is 1.3 metres of sea-level equivalent per degree of warming up to 2 degrees above pre-industrial levels, almost doubling to 2.4 metres per degree of warming between 2 and 6 degrees and increasing to about 10 metres per degree of warming between 6 and 9 degrees.

27% US marketu (trzni kapitalizace) tlaci na US congress pro climate policy action

Net Zero Is The New Business Imperative
    https://www.forbes.com/...yexchange/2020/09/23/net-zero-is-the-new-business-imperative/#50db5b9d4fd4

Climate change doesn’t pause for pandemics or economic downturns, as evidenced by the wildfires raging on the West Coast, and hurricanes battering the Southeast. These impacts are pounding our economy so frequently and severely that the Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s most recent report, which involved experts from the financial services, energy and agricultural sectors, warns that climate change could destabilize the U.S. financial system.
    ...

In fact, the number of net zero pledges has doubled in less than a year, including more than 1,500 companies with a combined revenue of more than $11.4 trillion, per a new analysis by NewClimate Institute and Data-Driven Enviro Lab.
    ...

That’s why this month’s climate policy statement from the Business Roundtable, whose members account for 27% of total US market capitalization, is a powerful call on Congress to make climate policy a top priority. In addition, the group endorsed a set of principles to guide the development of U.S. climate policy.

Climate activists – out of prison for now, but still effectively silenced. - Real Media - The News You Don't See
    https://realmedia.press/climate-activists-silenced/

This morning at Wood Green Crown Court in North London, Judge J. Dodd QC freed Extinction Rebellion founder Roger Hallam, and retired GP Dr Diana Warner, who have both spent a month in prison on remand.

    ...

after four weeks in prison under what were described as very difficult conditions (including days of solitary confinement, lack of exercise, mice, cockroaches, and no vegan food other than cold water pot noodles) the two were released. New bail and curfew conditions were imposed on all – the staggered curfew was replaced by a simple overnight curfew, with a strong warning that any breach will likely mean a return to prison.

Additionally, Hallam was ordered to wear an electronic tag.

The next case management meeting will be at the end of November, but there is no likelihood of a trial until well into next year.

If you thought pre-crime and thought crime were something from dystopian sci-fi, bear in mind that these five passionate climate activists are on stringent bail conditions not to talk to each other, on the basis of a recording of a meeting allegedly planning non-violent actions designed to bring attention to the seriousness and lack of government action over the climate crisis

Although they are under threat of further imprisonment that they mustn’t communicate with each other or plan any activism, their actual trial has no date and will certainly not take place for many months and possibly a year or more.

At a previous trial, in defiance of the judge’s directions, the jury sided with Hallam and delivered a ‘perverse judgement’ acquitting him of the criminal damage he’d caused at King’s College London. He persuaded them that his actions, as part of a successful campaign to force the college to divest from fossil-fuels, were necessary and proportionate, given the climate and ecological emergency.

U.S. and European Oil Giants Go Different Ways on Climate Change
    https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/21/business/energy-environment/oil-climate-change-us-europe.html

As oil prices plunge and concerns about climate change grow, BP, Royal Dutch Shell and other European energy companies are selling off oil fields, planning a sharp reduction in emissions and investing billions in renewable energy.

The American oil giants Chevron and Exxon Mobil are going in a far different direction. They are doubling down on oil and natural gas and investing what amounts to pocket change in innovative climate-oriented efforts like small nuclear power plants and devices that suck carbon out of the air.

The disparity reflects the vast differences in how Europe and the United States are approaching climate change, a global threat that many scientists say is increasing the frequency and severity of disasters like wildfires and hurricanes. European leaders have made tackling climate change a top priority while President Trump has called it a “hoax” and has dismantled environmental regulations to encourage the exploitation of fossil fuels.

    ...

To environmentalists and even some Wall Street investors, the American oil giants are clearly making the wrong call. In August, for example, Storebrand Asset Management, Norway’s largest private money manager, divested from Exxon Mobil and Chevron. And Larry Fink, who leads the world’s largest investment manager, BlackRock, has called climate change “a defining factor in companies’ long-term prospects.”

European oil executives, by contrast, have said that the age of fossil fuels is dimming and that they are planning to leave many of their reserves buried forever. They also argue that they must protect their shareholders by preparing for a future in which governments enact tougher environmental policies.
