Hotter Planet Already Poses Fatal Risks, Health Experts Warn
    https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/02/climate/climate-change-health-risks.html

Rising temperatures are already damaging human health around the world. In the last 20 years, a new report finds, extreme heat has been linked to a 50% increase in deaths of people over 65, with 296,000 deaths in 2018.

update climate actiontrackeru po Xiove vyhlaseni net zero ciny 2060

    Climate goals ‘within striking distance’
Net-zero pledges from China, Japan and South Korea and the election of US-president-elect Joe Biden have shifted the needle closer to achieving the targets set by the Paris climate agreement. Climate researchers say the world is on track to keep global warming below 2.1 ℃ compared with pre-industrial levels by the end of the century, and the more ambitious 1.5 ℃ target is “within striking distance”. “We now have north of 50% of global emissions covered by big countries with a zero emissions by mid-century goal,” says climate scientist Bill Hare, who helped to lead the analysis. “When you add all that up, along with what a whole bunch of other countries are doing, then you move the temperature dial from around 2.7 ℃ to really quite close to two degrees.” There are significant caveats: this is the optimistic scenario, which would require countries to back up their bold long-term commitments with the short-term actions to make them happen.

‎The RegenNarration: 75. Regenerating Civilisation: Allan Savory on holistic management, scaling & a sense of survival on Apple Podcasts
    https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-regennarration/id1236423380?i=1000500922110

Haul back through the spread of regenerative agriculture in recent decades, and Allan Savory is there. His global influence is hard to overstate. Here we chat about his extraordinary life, and the evolution of his insights that have proved so transformative for so many. Thinking holistically is one thing. But how do we actually manage our lives and societies holistically? And ultimately, how do we engage the institutions that we’ve come to so distrust, to enable regeneration at scale - in whatever our role or walk of life? Far from just in agriculture, but certainly not without it. Allan believes it’s possible, and proposes how it might be done.

RADIQAL: Johnson’s government is what warlord money buys. It could be seen as the perfect expression of the Pollution Paradox, a concept that I think is essential to understanding our politics. What this means is that the dirtier or more damaging an enterprise is, the more money it must spend on politics to ensure it’s not regulated out of existence. As a result, political funding comes to be dominated by the most harmful companies and oligarchs, which then wield the greatest political influence. They crowd out their more accommodating rivals.

It isn’t just about pollution. Damaging enterprises with an interest in buying political results include banks developing exotic financial instruments; property developers who resent the planning laws; junk food companies; bosses seeking to destroy employment rights; and plutocrats hoping to avoid tax. It’s why we’ll never have a healthy democracy without a radical reform of campaign finance.

Do roku 2025 uhlíková neutralita.

Humanity is waging war on nature, says UN secretary general | Environment | The Guardian
    https://www.theguardian.com/...ty-is-waging-war-on-nature-says-un-secretary-general-antonio-guterres
“Humanity is waging war on nature. This is suicidal. Nature always strikes back – and it is already doing so with growing force and fury. Biodiversity is collapsing. One million species are at risk of extinction. Ecosystems are disappearing before our eyes … Human activities are at the root of our descent toward chaos. But that means human action can help to solve it.”
“Making peace with nature is the defining task of the 21st century,” he said, in a virtual address entitled The State of the Planet, at Columbia University in New York. “It must be the top, top priority for everyone, everywhere.”

I declined to be involved in the IPCC WG 3 report, as it became clear that organized efforts to obstruct climate action were not going to be a major component of the analysis of barriers to mitigation. Sort of like trying to tell the story of Star Wars, but omitting Darth Vader. https://twitter.com/RBrulle/status/1329149786449174529?s=19

    ...

Yes! This is why I resigned from the IPCC AR5 report where I was assigned to the Chap 6 on "Assessing Transformation Pathways" which might more accurately have have been called "Uncritically Reporting our IAM model results".

IPCC science assessments work reasonably well, but IPCC assessment of mitigation pathways needs to break from allowing black-box IAM's to rule. There are better ways e.g. https://t.co/se6RZGtpsl https://t.co/nMnH6ZrwKu

Great to finally see this out! My chapter in this - 'Carbon unicorns and Fossil Futures: Whose emission reduction pathways is the IPCC performing?' - explores the politics of modeling negative emissions and unpacks some of the reasons why IAMs construct NETs as 'necessary'.

2020 Has It Come to This? - The Promises and Perils of Geoengineering on the Brink
    https://www.rutgersuniversitypress.org/has-it-come-to-this/9781978809352

Geoengineering is the deliberate and large-scale intervention in the Earth's climate system in an attempt to mitigate the adverse effects of global warming. Now that climate emergency is upon us, claims that geoengineering is inevitable are rapidly proliferating. How did we get into this situation where the most extreme path now seems a plausible development? Is it an accurate representation of where we are at? Who is this “we” who is talking? What options make it onto the table? Which are left out? Whom does geoengineering serve? Why is the ensemble of projects that goes by that name so salient, even though the community of researchers and advocates is remarkably small? These are some of the questions that the thinkers contributing to this volume are exploring from perspectives ranging from sociology and geography to ethics and Indigenous studies. The editors set out this diverse collection of voices not as a monolithic, unified take on geoengineering, but as a place where creative thinkers, students, and interested environmental and social justice advocates can explore nuanced ideas in more than 240 characters.

Dutch climate activists take Shell to court over emissions
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/...issions/2020/12/01/ed68d494-33ac-11eb-9699-00d311f13d2d_story.html

A group of environmental organizations backed by thousands of Dutch citizens launched a civil case Tuesday against the energy giant Shell, asking a court to order the multinational to commit to reining in its carbon emissions 45% by the year 2030.

    ...

Lawyer Roger Cox told a panel of three judges at The Hague District Court that Royal Dutch Shell’s corporate policy is “at odds” with global climate goals.

“The claimants therefore conclude that Royal Dutch Shell’s corporate policy is on collision course with global climate targets,” Cox said as he opened four days of hearings spread over the coming weeks.

    ...

Dutch arm of Friends of the Earth, is the latest in a string of cases around the world in which activists are using the courts to fight for action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from governments and companies.
