Perhaps what is most striking about this season is that we are now at the absolute peak of hurricane season, and there is simply nothing happening. Although the Atlantic season begins on June 1, it starts slowly, with maybe a storm here or there in June, and often a quiet July before the deep tropics get rolling in August. Typically about half of all activity occurs in the 14 weeks prior to September 10, and then in a mad, headlong rush the vast majority of the remaining storms spin up before the end of October.

Our best global models show about a 20 to 30 percent chance of a tropical depression developing anywhere in the Atlantic during the next 10 days.

This is the exact opposite of what we normally see this time of year, when the tropics are typically lit up like a Christmas tree. The reason for this is because September offers a window where the Atlantic is still warm from the summertime months, and we typically see some of the lowest wind-shear values in storm-forming regions.

Co jste si řekl, když ceny plynu vyskočily na 340 eur za megawatthodinu?

Za těchto cen nemá smysl podnikat. Takový nárůst se nedá promítnou do cen výrobků, nikdo je nekoupí

hnojiva stojí. Jejich výroba v Evropě jede na 10 až 15 procent kapacity. Zatím to nikdo moc neřeší, protože hnojiva budou zemědělci potřebovat až na jaře. Pokud se ale výroba jednou přeruší, tak i když se později najede, nedožene se to. Zemědělec pak nepohnojí nebo pohnojí míň. Takže bude méně potravin. A chemičky musí jet naplno, potřebují vytížení 80 procent. Když říkám, že výroba jede na desetinu, tak to znamená, že například BASF nebo Yara mají v provozu jenom jednu ze tří jednotek. Jeden závod běží v Polsku a jeden v Rakousku (závod v Linci, který je součástí v červnu oznámené akvizice Agrofertu od rakouského koncernu Borealis – pozn. red.).

Jak velký podíl v ceně hnojiv hraje plyn?
Při ceně plynu kolem 300 eur je to 90 procent výrobních nákladů. I při mnohem nižších to bylo asi 80 procent. Bez rozumné ceny plynu hnojiva v Evropě nikdo vyrábět nebude nebo budou extrémně drahá. V Evropě se začala výroba razantně omezovat ve chvíli, kdy cena plynu překročila 150 eur za megawatthodinu.

Hnojiva jsou na začátku výrobního řetězce proto, že čpavek je základní chemikálie. Jako vstupní surovinu ho používá řada dalších odvětví. Když nebude čpavek nebo bude extrémně drahý, tak to ovlivní celý chemický průmysl, projeví se to ve sklářství nebo automotive. Bez čpavku také nebude AdBlue (kapalina přidávaná do nafty na snížení emisí – pozn. red.) nebo oxid uhličitý CO2. Bez něj se nezabalí maso, protože všechno, co se kupuje v supermarketu, potřebuje ochrannou atmosféru, která obsahuje oxid uhličitý. Většina zeleniny se zase pěstuje ve sklenících, kde CO2 podporuje fotosyntézu. Bez něj nebude taková úroda. Nebo budou chybět bublinky do koly, sektů či piva. Tohle všechno je spojené s výrobou čpavku. Alternativou průmyslové výroby jsou u oxidu uhličitého čistírny odpadních vod, kde se získává z odpadu a vyčistí se. Ale jeho kapacita nestačí.

New Prime Minister Liz Truss has appointed climate sceptic Jacob Rees-Mogg to lead on issues relating to energy and the climate crisis, sparking concern amongst climate campaigners.

Rees-Mogg, who invests in oil and coal mining through a fund he co-founded, Somerset Capital Management, has also rejected calls for a windfall tax on energy companies ‘so they can get every last drop out of the North Sea.’

Friends of the Earth’s head of political affairs, Dave Timms, said: ‘Putting someone who recently suggested “every last drop” of oil should be extracted from the North Sea in charge of energy policy is deeply worrying for anyone concerned about the deepening climate emergency, solving the cost-of-living crisis and keeping our fuel bills down for good.
