The province of Alberta, Canada, home to more than four million people, is under a state of emergency, as nearly 100 wildfires burn, dozens of them out of control.
Since the first local state of emergency was declared on 4 May, over 782,000 hectares of land - 1.9 million American football fields or more than 3,000 square miles - have burned, local officials said.
Thousands of firefighters and support staff from across Canada and the US have descended upon the area to fight the ceaseless flames.
Still, there are 93 active wildfires in Alberta as of 12:00 EST (17:00 BST) on Friday, and experts say the end is nowhere in sight.

Forecasts by economists of the economic damage from climate change have been notably sanguine, compared to warnings by scientists about damage to the biosphere. This is because economists made their own predictions of damages, using three spurious methods: assuming that about 90% of GDP will be unaffected by climate change, because it happens indoors; using the relationship between temperature and GDP today as a proxy for the impact of global warming over time; and using surveys that diluted extreme warnings from scientists with optimistic expectations from economists. Nordhaus has misrepresented the scientific literature to justify the using a smooth function to describe the damage to GDP from climate change. Correcting for these errors makes it feasible that the economic damages from climate change are at least an order of magnitude worse than forecast by economists, and may be so great as to threaten the survival of human civilization.

To je ekonom a myslim, ze s jeho odhadem by souhlasilo jen malo klimatologu. A to proto, ze prace Williama Nordhause k vycisleni skod klimatickejch skod je teda podle vseho dost crap. Podle Steve Keena, kterej se tim zabejval podrobne - Nordhaus vezme HDP a prumernou teplotu v danem miste, podle toho pocita korelace. Vyjde mu jakasi pofiderni slaba korelace mezi teplotou a HDP a s timhle to modeluje. Mj vychaiz, ze otepleni kolem 3 stupnu je vlastne optimalni a o 4 stupne s trivialnima skodama. Coz je tak dementni, ze to muze udelat jenom ekonom. Mimojine z toho vychazi, ze damage function modelu je symetricka, takze stejne minimalni by bylo i ochlazeni do konce stoleti o 4 stupne, tak ztratime par procent HDP. No akoratze ochlazeni globalni otepleni o 4°C znamena nastup doby ledove .))
