The European Commission will permit countries to outsource a portion of their climate efforts to poorer countries from 2036, according to a draft proposal obtained by POLITICO.

The EU executive plans to present the bloc’s 2040 emissions-reduction target on Wednesday after several months of delay. The goal will be set at 90 percent below 1990 levels, the draft amendment to the European Climate Law shows.

But as POLITICO reported in mid-June, the Commission intends to meet up to 3 percentage points of the new target with international carbon credits, despite fierce criticism from its own scientific advisers. This plan aligns with Germany’s position on the 2040 goal.

Some species of fig trees store calcium carbonate in their trunks – essentially turning themselves (partially) into stone, new research has found. The team of Kenyan, U.S., Austrian, and Swiss scientists found that the trees could draw carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and store it as calcium carbonate ‘rocks’ in the surrounding soil.

The research is being presented this week at the Goldschmidt conference in Prague.

The trees – native to Kenya – are one of the first fruit trees shown to have this ability, known as the oxalate carbonate pathway.

Greene announced in a Saturday tweet that she intends to wage war on the “deadly” practice of “climate modification” and “geoengineering” with a bill that would make any such efforts a felony offense.

According to Greene, she’s been “researching weather modification” and now she is ready to take action after spending months “writing this bill” with her legislative counsel.

She added, “It will be similar to Florida’s Senate Bill 56. We must end the dangerous and deadly practice of weather modification and geoengineering.”

In a since-deleted 2018 Facebook post, multiple news outlets reported that Greene suggested that “lasers or blue beams of light” from “space solar generators” in the sky, controlled by Jewish people, may have caused a spate of wildfires—including the 150,000-acre Camp Fire in California that killed 85 people. She has denied she made such a claim in a later interview.

“Yes they can control the weather,” she wrote, “it’s ridiculous for anyone to lie and say it can’t be done.”

Dalším problémem je nedostatek vody, která je k výrobě baterií potřebná. U města Debrecín, kde se podle BBC kvůli klimatické změně snižuje počet deštivých dní a mizí i podpovrchová voda, bude v budoucnu stát již zmiňovaná čínská továrna CATL. I v tomto městě, které je tradiční baštou strany Fidesz, se proto vyrazilo na protest do ulic.

„Problém není vyloženě to, čemu budou čelit firmy, ale čemu budou čelit místní. Je možné, že voda postačí pro továrny, ale už jí nebude dostatek pro místní,“ líčí jednu z obav Szunomár.

Do procesu by mohla vstoupit i Evropská unie, Szunomár si ale není jistá, jakou formou by k tomu mohlo dojít. Podle ní se v maďarském případě tříští dva principy, kterých se EU drží. Prvním je snaha o derisking, snížení rizika, a tím pádem i upuštění od čínských investic spojených s bateriovým průmyslem. Druhým je Green Deal, který se snaží snížit emise skleníkových plynů, a proto podporuje elektromobilitu.

„Pro elektrická auta potřebujete baterie a evropské baterie zatím nejsou natolik silné a inovativní. Několik let potrvá, než evropské firmy vyrobí něco podobného k už dostupným jihokorejským a čínským bateriím,“ líčí maďarská ekonomka. „Znamená to, že potřebují čínské baterie nyní.”
