Když nějaký vědní obor místo živého diskursu připomíná spíše nerozbornou a uvědomělou národní frontu, je to i pouhému laikovi prostě poněkud podezřelé. Z tohoto pohledu lze jistě „pozvednout obočí“ nad dnešní klimatologií a nejen její bratření se s jistou švédskou dorostenkou. Tady se lze důvodně obávat, že různé pohledy na věc klimatologie novému americkému prezidentovi nabízet nebude. Až bude naslouchat, neuslyší živé bublání vřelé vody, ale jednotvárné hučení.

Sponzorovaný obsah na Facebooku, který popírá realitu klimatické krize, vidělo jen v první polovině roku 2020 v USA nejméně 8 milionů lidí. Pří průzkumu skupiny InfluenceMap bylo identifikováno 51 dezinformačních reklam o změně klimatu, které uváděly, že změna klimatu je podvod a že fosilní paliva nejsou hrozbou. Podle zprávy skupiny InfluenceMap byly reklamy placeny konzervativními skupinami, jejichž zdroje financování jsou neprůhledné.
Sociální síť Facebook letos v září uvedla, že se „zavázala k boji proti dezinformacím o klimatu“. Ve svém prohlášení napsala: „Změna klimatu je skutečná. Věda je jednoznačná a potřeba jednat je každým dnem naléhavější.“ Některé popíračské reklamy se stále zobrazovaly ještě 1. října. Facebook přitom využívá kontroly faktů a zakazuje falešnou reklamu, ale současně říká, že tento proces „nemá zasahovat do individuálního vyjádření, názorů a debaty“.
Popíračské reklam jsou vysoce cílené, s největší pravděpodobností je uvidí muži ve věku nad 55 let ve venkovských oblastech Spojených států. Bývalý ředitel pro udržitelnost Facebooku Bill Weihl, současně působící v nevládní organizaci ClimateVoice, uvedl: „Upozornění na problém dezinformací o změně klimatu na Facebooku je zásadní, protože omezené pokusy společnosti o řešení problému nedokáží držet krok s taktikami jako zacílení reklamy.“

Corporate records filed with the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) confirm that the AIER operates as part of a Koch-funded network of climate science deniers who see environmental regulation as a threat to its vision of unfettered, deregulated markets.
The latest available IRS documents reveal that in 2018, the AIER received $68,100 for “General Operating Support” from the Charles Koch Foundation, which acts on behalf of right-wing billionaire Charles Koch.
Through their various foundations and other entities, Charles and his brother, the late David Koch, are well-known for being among the world’s biggest founders of climate science denial.
The AIER itself is no stranger to such denialism. All its climate change related reports and commentaries are studiously dedicated to downplaying the severity of climate risks and obfuscating the science around human exploitation of oil, gas and coal in driving current global warming levels.
The AIER has published climate science deniers such as the economist David Henderson, who has rejected the validity of the scientific consensus on climate change.
AIER’s President is the leading Austrian school economist Edward P. Stringham, a Research Fellow with The Independent Institute – another market-oriented think-tank that has regularly questioned the science of man-made climate change and received Koch funding, as well as support from ExxonMobil.

These Big Tobacco-style tactics – doubt-mongering, character assassination, intellectual hitjobs, and undisclosed conflicts of interest – are precisely the sort of product-defense maneuvers that ExxonMobil perfected while attacking climate science and climate scientists. The only difference now is that they are coming after the social sciences, too.

But it’s hardly the first time. When we published our study, ExxonMobil immediately responded with a straw man, a falsehood, cherry picking, and ad hominem attacks. Last year, they sent a now-leaked memo to Members of European Parliament in an attempt to discredit one of us (Geoffrey Supran) who had been invited to testify to that parliament as an expert witness about the company’s history of climate denial. And for the past three years, ExxonMobil has run a social media campaign accusing us of publishing “manufactured” science at the behest of “a political campaign.” It has been viewed millions of times.
