The screen time guidelines issued by pediatric associations have largely treated all screen time as equivalent: one hour on YouTube, one hour playing Minecraft, one hour video chatting with grandparents, and one hour passively watching television are not the same cognitive experience, but they add to the same count. Research that treats screen time as a single variable is measuring an extraordinarily heterogeneous set of behaviors as if they were one thing.
When researchers have looked more carefully at what children are doing on screens, a different picture emerges. Educational content, coding games, strategic video games, and creative platforms like digital drawing or music production involve sustained attention, problem-solving, pattern recognition, and working memory in ways that may actively develop the cognitive skills the CogState battery measures. Passive consumption of algorithmically served short-form video is a different activity with a different cognitive profile.
The Finnish children in this study were growing up in a high-income country with strong educational systems and engaged parenting. The screen activities available to them, and the contexts in which they used screens, may differ substantially from populations in other countries or socioeconomic contexts. The researchers do not have data on what these children were doing on their screens, which is the single most important missing variable in interpreting the finding.
