    But at the Frankfurt School’s Institute for Social Research, Max Horkheimer is working on a new idea: Critical Theory.

    Unlike traditional scholarship, which sought to understand society, this is explicitly designed as a tool to transform it. Horkheimer argued that intellectuals should not be neutral observers but active participants in the struggle to overturn capitalist society.

    This marked a profound shift in the purpose of the social sciences and humanities. Traditional disciplines aimed at truth, explanation and understanding, but Critical Theory rejected this as naïve and complicit. Instead, it treated every major institution - the family, universities, media, law, religion, and even language itself - as a site of ideological struggle and hidden power relations. The goal was to “unmask” these institutions as tools of domination and to use scholarship as a form of political activism.

    This approach spread rapidly through Western academia, especially after the Frankfurt School thinkers emigrated to the United States. It laid the groundwork for what later became known as “engaged scholarship”: objectivity was dismissed as a myth that served the powerful; knowledge was reframed as inherently political: either it challenged the existing order or it reinforced it.

    The long-term consequences are now obvious. Many departments in the humanities and social sciences no longer see their primary role as the pursuit of truth, but as advancing social and political change. This is why we see so much activism masquerading as scholarship, and why dissent on certain topics is often treated as moral failure rather than intellectual disagreement.

    Critical Theory succeeded in turning the institutions that shape culture into instruments of ideological warfare. What began as a relatively obscure Marxist project has become one of the dominant intellectual forces in the modern West.

    NJAL: K Interhelpu mám doma knihu, myslím, že se tam narodil Dubček. Číst to byla hrozná sranda, hlavní organizátor komunista Mareček je tam zverboval a poslal úplně nepřipravené na ty podmínky, ale pak sám nenastoupil do vlaku, asi aby mu nerozbili hubu :-)

    Sám se narozdíl od mnoha těch osadníků dožil vysokého věku a pořádal tam výlety do hor.

    In 1932, as the Holodomor famine was killing millions in Ukraine, the British socialists Sidney and Beatrice Webb travelled to Stalin’s USSR, then returned home to produce a 1,200-page love letter to the Bolshevik regime. Their two-volume book Soviet Communism: A New Civilisation?(1935) is a notorious example of wilful intellectual blindness from two of Stalin’s most useful idiots.
    The Webbs, the intellectual power couple of the Fabian Society, spent two months on a carefully stage-managed tour of the Soviet Union. What they claimed to have seen was not the reality of a totalitarian nightmare but a “new civilisation” superior to anything the West could offer. They insisted there was no forced labour, no famine, and that the secret police existed only to protect the people. Unemployment had been “abolished”, trials were fair, and Stalin was portrayed as a wise, benevolent planner guiding the country toward true democracy.
    Even as the Great Purge made the horrors of Stalinism impossible to ignore, the Webbs never issued a full retraction. Two of Britain’s most influential socialists, who through the Fabian Society and the Labour Party helped shape the intellectual climate that produced the post-war welfare state and nationalisations, used their considerable prestige to whitewash mass murder and totalitarian control - all for ideological purposes. Their book showed how easily collectivist intellectuals abandon truth to cover for the fantasy of a planned utopia.
