LONDON COPS seem to be picking up people at random, accusing them of being terrorists and taking their electronic goods into custody.

David Mery, who among other things is an IT reviewer and who we know pretty well, was waiting for his girlfriend with his laptop in his rucksack in Southwark tube station. The next thing he knew he was surrounded by uniformed cops, cuffed and his rucksack checked for devices.

Police found a "nice laptop" in the bag which they confiscated. He was charged with suspicious behaviour and public nuisance and hauled off to Walworth police station, to be fingerprinted and get a DNA swab done.

Mery's flat was then searched and they found all the usual stuff that journo geeks have at their place including ancient mobile phones a Jurassic period IBM Stinkpad, a BeBox tower computer, a handheld GPS receiver, a frequency counter, a radio scanner, a blue RS232C breakout box, cables, a Black Hat computer security conference leaflet, envelopes with addresses, maps of Prague and London Heathrow, and some business cards.

There were also some snaps of the ACM97 conference – for the 50 years of the Association of Computing Machinery.

Mery was told the only reason they had arrested him was because there was a firearms incident at his work last year. He was let go but they have decided to hang on to his laptop and the other stuff they confiscated from his flat.

Although Mery has a slight French accent, and is an Open Sauce advocate, he could have just been a normal geek on the street. At least he can count himself lucky that he wasn’t a South American electrician. They have a short life expectancy on the London Underground.

USA Bars Robert Fisk From Entering Country

U.S. immigration officials refused Tuesday to allow Robert Fisk, longtime Middle East correspondent for the London newspaper, The Independent, to board a plane from Toronto to Denver. Fisk was on his way to Santa Fe for a sold-out appearance in the Lannan Foundation’s readings-and-conversations series Wednesday night.

According to Christie Mazuera Davis, a Lannan program officer, Fisk was told that his papers were not in order.

Davis made last-minute arrangements Wednesday for Amy Goodman, host of Pacifica Radio’s daily news show, Democracy Now!, to interview Fisk via satellite from a television station in Toronto. He appeared on a large screen onstage at the Lensic Performing Arts Center.

The controversial British journalist, who is based in Beirut, filed many eyewitness reports on the U.S. invasion of Iraq and criticized Western reporters for “hotel journalism ,” a phrase he coined to describe correspondents who covered the war from heavily fortified hotel suites and offices.

The Shia militia accused of taking two SAS soldiers hostage in Basra this week sought to stoke growing anti-British sentiment in southern Iraq yesterday by accusing London of masterminding terrorist attacks in the country.

The smear campaign is another blow to the British Army's hopes of restoring its affection among locals and its previously good relationship with Basra's administration - two factors that have distinguished the British-controlled south from Iraq's chaotic Sunni Arab provinces.

Relations with Iraqi authorities in the country's second city sank to their lowest level after Basra's governing council announced it was ending all co-operation with British forces in response to Monday's rescue of the two soldiers.

Basra's governor, Mohammed al-Wa'eli, accused Britain of "imperial arrogance".

He told Reuters news agency: "The governing council has decided to stop all co-operation with the British until they meet three demands. To apologise for what happened, to guarantee that it does not happen again, and third, to provide some compensation for all the damage they did during the operation."

Abdel Hadi al-Daraji, the cleric's top official in his main bastion, the sprawling Sadr City slums of Baghdad, told The Daily Telegraph that Britain was plotting to start an ethnic war by carrying out mass-casualty bombings targeting Shia civilians and then blaming the attacks on Sunni Arab groups.

"Everyone knows the occupiers' agenda," insisted Mr Daraji, who is currently the only Mahdi army official authorised to speak directly on Sadr's behalf.

"They are in bed with Mossad [the Israeli intelligence service] and their intention is to keep Iraq an unstable battlefield so they can exploit their interests in Iraq." But Mr Daraji insisted that Sadr was not going to call for a Shia uprising in Basra, where he enjoys only a limited, if growing, following in the city's slums.

"We have to take the moral high ground and resist this provocation by the British," he said. "This is a very dangerous, very sensitive time in Iraq but we must calm our supporters or we will fall into the British trap."

Plán vypracovat seznam historických událostí, které bude trestné oslavovat, je známkou toho, že se Blair konečně zbláznil. O navrhovaném opatření píše Simon Jenkins v deníku Guardian:

Britský ministr vnitra Charles Clarke slíbil premiérovi, že nechá odsoudit na pět let do vězení každého, kdo bude "glorifikovat, vychvalovat či oslavovat" nějaký teroristický čin, spáchaný za posledních 20 let. Je jedno, zda půjde o úmyslnou či neúmyslnou glorifikaci. Pokud se někdo rozhodne interpretovat to, co píšu či říkám, jako glorifikaci terorismu, i když na základě toho nespáchají žádný teroristický čin, znamená to, že jsem spáchal trestný čin, píše Simon Jenkins.

A Clarke připravuje seznam teroristických činů, spáchaných v minulosti, které bude trestným činem oslavovat. K tomu Clarke přidá otevřený katalog dalších událostí. Půjde o násilné činy proti lidem, majetku, či - bizarně - elektronickým systémům kdekoliv na světě, pokud má být cílem prosazovat tím nějakou politickou, náboženskou či ideologickou kauzu či ovlivňovat vládu.

Tento překvapivý návrh zákona vypracoval během léta jakýsi pracovník Blairova úřadu v Downing Street. Podle Jenkinse to připomíná práci starého známého Výboru pro neamerické záležitosti ve Washingtonu v padesátých letech a zároveň sovětské akademie věd.

Jasnou známkou toho, že šéf státu ztrácí svůj styk se skutečností, je to, když začne zasahovat do historie. Blairova "Nová labouristická strana" se zrodila z popírání vlastní minulosti. Blairova strana byla "nelabouristická", "neliberální", "nekonzervativní" - "byli jsme to prostě my". Proto Clarke nepotřebuje cenzurovat události před jejím vznikem. Proto ta hranice poloviny osmdesátých let.

Terorismus, jak je definován tímto zákonem, se však v podstatě kryje s historií lidstva, míní autor. Britská prokuratura by měla najmout experty na Alexandra Velikého, Džingischána, Innocenta III. a na protireformaci v Jižní Americe. Bude muset studovat křižáckou výpravu proti Albigenským.

Toto je vláda, která se zabývá trivialitami a jedná, podle toho, co ji napadne. Clarkův seznam prý nebude obsahovat žádné teroristické činy, které spáchali Irové. Proč? Proč mají zrovna Irové dostat výjimku? Brzo si zřejmě různí pachatelé teroristických činů budou mít možnost vyjednat, aby zrovna jejich činy nebyly začleněny do seznamu teroristických činů britské vlády, které bude zakázáno vychvalovat.

I pokud nepoukážeme na banalitu, že to, co je pro jednoho člověka teroristickým činem, je pro druhého aktem hrdinství, vznikají velké problémy. O britském bombardování německých měst na konci druhé světové války řekl sám Churchill, že je jeho účelem "zvýšit teror". Zničení Hirošimy jadernou bombou bylo zcela zjevně politicky motivovaným útokem na lidi a na majetek. Letos v srpnu jej sice média neglorifikovala, ale zcela určitě ho oslavovala.

Budou na seznamu zakázaných událostí také Hirošima a Drážďany? Spisovatel Joseph Conrad měl pravdu: "Terorista a policista pocházejí ze stejného košíku."

Tímto rozšířením cenzury se stává každý obhájce každého osvobozeneckého boje pachatelem trestných činů. Ještě to však může dopadnout špatně, míní autor a vysvětluje:

Já mám možnost činit morální rozdíl mezi Blairovým tažením proti některým muslimským státům a mezi násilnými činy, zorganizovanými organizací al Kajda proti mně. Já mám právo si myslet, že moje válka je správná kauza a jejich nikoliv.

Soudy ale toto takto rozlišovat nesmějí. Účelem americkobritského útoku proti Iráku v březnu 2003 bylo zastrašit civilní obyvatelstvo Iráku, aby svrhli Saddáma. Operace se jmenovala "Shock and Awe" - Šok a bázeň. Vychloubala se tím cílem.

Downing Street není sama v tomto orwellovském myšlení. Tento týden se k němu přidal i Brusel. Evropská komise varovala média, aby nepřijímala "zjednodušený a spiklenecký názor na svět tam, kde jde o nespravedlnost a útlak." I novináři si prostě mají dávat pozor a "nezjednodušovat".

Je Velká Británie teroristický stát?

Irácká policie nedávno zadržela dva teroristy s automobilem plným výbušnin. Z auta, jedoucího na okraji obsazeného města se spustila střelba na policejní kontrolní stanoviště a jeden policista byl zabit. Po honičce bylo vozidlo obklíčeno, řidiči zatčeni a policisté objevili, že auto je naloženo výbušninami – nepochybně součást plánů povstalců na další zabíjení a ničení majetku. Aby toho nebylo málo, když byli zatčení zavřeni do vězení, jejich spojenci se dostali ke zdi vězení, zbořili ji a navzdory zápalným lahvím a hořícímu oblečení zachránili své druhy. 150 dalších vězňů v nastalém zmatku uprchlo. Tohle se právě stalo v jižním Iráku v Basře. Řidiči toho auta naloženého výbušninami nebyli členové povstalecké skupiny – byla to Britská speciální jednotka. A jejich zachránci? Britští vojáci v Britských tancích. Je smutnou pravdou, že dva členové Britských ozbrojených sil přestrojení za Arabské civilisty zastřelili příslušníka Iránské policie aby se vyhnuli zadržení. Když lidé v Basře oprávněně odmítli vydat vrahy Britské vládě, Britové s mandátem koalice pro ně poslali své vlastní muže a přitom umožnili utéci více než 150 vězňům. Z toho všeho je zřejmé, že cizí mocnost se pokusila fingovat teroristický útok. Kvůli čemu jinému by se vojáci oblékali jako Arabové, než kvůli falešnému obvinění? Nač by měli auto naložené výbušninami, než aby s nimi něco zničili? Iráku hrozí občanská válka a tahle operace měla urychlit celý proces. Měli být zabiti lidé a někdo by z toho byl obviněn. Nic více, nic méně. Potom Britská armáda sehrála parádní únik, jelikož normální diplomatickou cestou, jak získat své lidi zpět, neuspěla. V Iráku bylo v posledních dnech hodně bombových útoků, provedených povstalci. Ale kdo je doopravdy zodpovědný za krveprolití a ničení? Jediným hmatatelným ziskem ze všech výbuchů je ospravedlnění setrvání koaličních sil, aby udržovaly mír v Iráku. Kdo má z toho prospěch?
Určitě ne Iráčané – ti už jsou přesvědčeni, že většinu sebevražedných bombových útoků provádějí Američané, aby vyvolali náboženskou válku. V několika článcích se už celá událost obrátila proti Iráčanům, kteří bojovali proti Britským tankům, bořícím zeď vězení. Byli označeni za agresivní Šiítskou milici útočící na upřímné, nevinné vojáky, kteří šli na pomoc svým kamarádům zadrženým náboženskými fanatiky. „Íránci si dávají dobrý pozor, aby nebyli dopadeni“, řekl Britský důstojník když Spojené království hrozilo navržením sankcí u Rady bezpečnosti SN proti Íránu. Je zlé, že si Britové pozor nedávají! Pak by možná mohli provést svoji mafiánskou misi bez toho, že by vypadali jako úplní blbci! Veškeré násilí, které propuklo v Basře v souvislosti s tímto incidentem padá jednoznačně na vrub Britské armády a jejich speciálních jednotek.

Takovéto akce jsou neomluvitelné a trapné; ale aspoň vedou k zamyšlení. Jestliže se země jako Spojené království odhodlá provést teroristický čin, jak velké podvody jsou schopny provádět Spojené státy? Jestli jste si mysleli, že by USA nikdy nenechali mezi lidmi vybuchnout nálož s úmyslem podpořit své akce, popřemýšlejte ještě jednou. A můžete začít u tohoto incidentu.

Muslimský duchovní tvrdí, že Al Zarkawi je již dlouho mrtev nahoru
Vůdce Al Kajdy v Iráku Abu Musab Zarekawi je mrtvý, ale Washington stále užívá jeho jména jako strašáka pro ospravedlnění jejich vojenské okupace, řekl šíitský duchovní v jednom rozhovoru. Šejch Jawad al Kalesi, imám v mešitě al Kadhimiyah v Bagdádu řekl v pátek francouzským novinám Le Monde : "Nemyslím si, že Abu Musáb Zarkawi existuje jako takový. Jednoduše je to vynález k rozdělení lidí". Al Kalesi tvrdí, že Al Zarkawi byl zabit v kurdském regionu na začátku války když se sešel se členy Ansár Al Islam. Jeho rodina dokonce uspořádala jeho pohřeb. Al Zarkawi je užíván Spojenými státy, aby ospravedlnili pokračující okupaci. Je to záminka, aby zůstali v Iráku. Duchovní také připustil, že Zarkáwiho TV prohlášení jsou falešná. Duchovní dále řekl, že zvuková nahrávka poslána ve středu na internet a která byla připsána Zarkawimu, má za cíl to, aby se šíité připojili k Američanům než k odporu. V nahrávce Zarkawi vyhlásil "totální válku" šíitům a přihlásil se k útokům kde zahynulo 150 lidí, většinou šíité, když čekali v Bagdádu na práci. Iráčtí sunničtí duchovní jasně odsoudili tuto výzvu, kterou považují za krajně nebezpečnou, ve které vidí jasný pokus rozdělení země a snahu rozpoutat občanskou válku.

The last remaining public justification for the U.S./U.K. occupation of Iraq is terrorism: The foreign forces cannot leave until Iraq is somewhat peaceful and the terrorists have been defeated.

That threadbare reasoning was ripped apart on Monday as the world -- other than the United States, where broadcast media avoided the story -- was shown two agents provocateurs employed by the British government. Their exact mission will never be proven. The evidence, however, is damning.

The two commandoes -- alternately identified as members of Britian's notorious SAS or a newer offshoot, the SRR -- were driving around a demonstration in Basra when their suspicious behavior attracted the attention of Basra police.

The Scotsman now reports that the men are members of the SRR, or Special Reconnaissance Regiment. The insignia shows a Greek helmet with a sword thrust through the mouth and up through the back of the skull.

The police attempted to stop the men, who were disguised as Arabs in local garb over their T-shirts and trousers. The men wore black-hair wigs and, according to some reports, typical headresses.

And they also carried a whole lot of weapons, including explosives and other bomb-making materials. They began firing at the police and passers-by.

At least one Basra policeman was shot dead. At least one person in the crowd was shot dead. An undetermined number of others were injured in the gunfight.

The British pair was jailed. Arab television showed the beaten men with bandages on their heads, and their huge collection of weaponry. Basra -- a relatively peaceful city compared to the rest of bloodsoaked Iraq -- had suddenly lost patience with the British occupiers, caught red-handed with all the tools necessary to launch "suicide bombs" against the people.

And then the British tanks rolled in ... and destroyed the jail, releasing 150 "terrorists" in the process. Whether the British commandoes were inside the jail is now disputed, as are most parts of the story, with Britian in damage-control mode and Iraq officials universally condeming the "barbaric" destruction of the jail and the suspected terrorist goals of the captured duo.

The city rioted against the tanks and troops, setting fire to at least one of the tanks.

U.K. media is now desperately backpedaling from the version of events reported by at least a dozen independent reporters working in Iraq, after reporting the same general events as other world media on Monday.

A spokesman for rebel Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr said the British commandoes were trying to pass themselves off as members of Sadr's rebel militia.

Sheikh Hassan told Socialist Worker that the two undercover soldiers seized by Iraqi police last Monday were armed with explosives and a remote control detonator. The soldiers were disguised as members of Sadr's militia, the Mehdi Army.

The trouble started when a senior Sadr official was arrested on Sunday. "We called a protest outside the mayor’s office on Monday demanding the Sheikh be released," Sheikh Hassan said. "This protest was peaceful."

"But events in our city took a sinister turn when the police tried to stop two men dressed as members of the Mehdi Army driving near the protest. The men opened fire on the police and passers-by. After a car chase they were arrested."

"What our police found in their car was very disturbing — weapons, explosives and a remote control detonator," Sheikh Hassan said. "These are the weapons of terrorists. We believe these soldiers were planning an attack on a market or other civilian targets, and thanks be to God they were stopped and countless lives were saved."

There are about 8,500 British troops in and around Basra. Four Iraqis died in the riots against the jailbreak mission. Also, a local reporter who wrote for the New York Times and The Guardian was found murdered after being abducted by mysterious gunmen.

Following the lead of its American partners, the British Ministry of Defense denied all wrongdoing, called the destruction of the jail "absolutely right," and blamed everything on a "civil war" developing (or Iran, depending on the mouthpiece) in southern Iraq.

EU unveils plan to log all electronic, phone communication

The European Commission has adopted proposals to log details of all telephone, Internet, and e-mail traffic, to combat terrorism and serious crime.

The push for EU-wide data storage came after the Madrid bomb attacks last year, and intensified after the London bomb attacks in July, when Britain took over the rotating EU presidency.

The Commission proposes storing data related to mobile and fixed telephone traffic for a year, to allow the police to trace the time, place, and numbers used.

Internet data such as e-mails would be kept for six months.

The Commission's text aims to harmonise the current patchwork of data retention practices across the bloc.

The executive's Vice President Franco Frattini said the harmonisation will take into account the fundamental rights of security, the protection of private information, the interests of the police and concerns of industry.

The Commission's proposal will need to be agreed by member states and the European Parliament, while a rival plan will need unanimous agreement among the 25 EU governments.

The rival plan proposal envisages storing data between one and three years.

The following Reuters report raises some disturbing questions.

Why were undercover British "soldiers" wearing traditional Arab headscarves firing at Iraqi police?

The incident took place just prior to a major religious event in Basra.

The report suggests that the police thought the British soldiers looked "suspicious". What was the nature of their mission?

Occupation forces are supposesd to be collaborating with Iraqi authorities. Why did Britsh Forces have to storm the prison using tanks and armoured vehicles to liberate the British undercover agents?

"British forces used up to 10 tanks " supported by helicopters " to smash through the walls of the jail and free the two British servicemen."

Was there concern that the British "soldiers" who were being held by the Iraqi National Guard would be obliged to reveal the nature and objective of their undercover mission?

A report of Al Jazeera TV, which preceeded the raid on the prison, suggests that the British undercover soldiers were driving a booby trapped car loaded with ammunition. The Al Jazeera report (see below) also suggests that the riots directed against British military presence were motivated because the British undercover soldiers were planning to explode the booby trapped car in the centre of Basra:

To give families a measure of protection against this ever increasing problem, the Grand Lodge of Indiana and Indiana DeMolay are proud to introduce the Child Identification Program to the state of Indiana. Based on a very successful program started by the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, the Indiana Freemasons Child Identification Program (CHIP) addresses the alarming fact that over 1,000,000 children are reported missing in the United States each year. Sadly, the abduction of children is both under-reported and rapidly increasing in our society. While most are found, many are not.

The Indiana Freemasons' CHIP is the most comprehensive child identification program currently available to our communities. CHIP helps concerned parents to promote the safety of their children by providing a fast, simple packet of information to help authorities identify and recover lost, missing or exploited kids.

The program consists of a brief interview with the child that is recorded on a video cassette to show his or her mannerisms and speech patterns. The child's fingerprints are taken, and a DNA sample is made by swabbing the inside of the child's mouth. All identifying materials are given to the parent or guardian once the child has been processed. No materials or private information is retained by the Freemasons or any law enforcement agency. The program is free and no appointment is necessary.

Indiana Lodges are encouraged to find ways to appear at local fairs, carnivals or events. Local schools may also be interested in hosting the program. Lodges may group together to share costs and volunteers, and local law enforcement agencies have been historically supportive of these events.

Lodges interested in holding a CHIP event should contact Jeff Koleszar at the Indiana DeMolay Foundation, at (317) 536-8093 or via e-mail at indianademolay@insightbb.com. All questions that go to the Grand Lodge office are referred to the DeMolay Foundation. Kits containing all materials needed and a detailed instruction manual will be shipped to the Lodges and a box will be included to return the materials when the event has ended.

Each kit is equipped to handle 100 children over a four hour period and costs $195. This price includes shipping to the Lodge, however, the Lodge must pay to return the materials at the conclusion of the event.

A CHIP kit contains the following:

* 2 mini-CD video cameras (4 batteries)
* 2 tripods
* 100 mini-CDs and cases
* 1 extension cord
* 1 guidebook that details the entire setup and processes needed to run the program
* 1 height chart
* 1 scale
* Registration forms
* Parental consent forms
* 3 sets of small bags (DNA bags) (300 total)
* 1 set of larger bags (to hold all of the material - 100 bags per set)
* Fingerprinting stamp
* 100 DNA - Oral swab kits
* Registration signs
* Grand Lodge CHIP Banner
* All printed material needed.

Organization and publicity are crucial to the success of a CHIP event, and Lodges are encouraged to develop partnerships with local civic and parents groups, not only to ease manpower burdens on the Lodge, but to give a stronger local sense of involvement for the whole community.

In order to be successful, CHIP must be made consistently available throughout the state of Indiana, and all Freemasons are encouraged to support their lodges and other community groups in this project. When you consider the frightening statistics that over one million children are reported missing in the United States each year, and there are over 100,000 attempted abductions by non-family members for the same period, the value of this program is enormous.

CHIP provides Freemasons with the opportunity to bring before our communities the principles of their Craft by example and deeds. By increasing awareness of what Freemasonry means and what Freemasons do, we promote the public image of our Fraternity. And we strengthen our ability to grow and provide even more good to our communities and to those whom we so dearly love, our families. Iraqi MP accuses British Forces in Basra of "Terrorism"

SAS Commandos Arrested and Sprung

Two British commandos, members of the secretive SAS were arrested by Iraqi police yesterday in the southern Iraqi city of Basra. The two men, dressed in Arab garb and driving an unmarked car, drew the attention of police. As the car was approached, shots were fired. Conflicting reports make the timeline of the exchange of fire unclear, and there are also discrepancies concerning casualties, some saying one policeman was wounded and/or killed, others claiming two police dead, while still others claim none were killed. But what is clear: the two soldiers were taken into custody and questioned by an Iraqi judge.

Some hours after the incident, British reinforcements arrived at the jail, demanding the release of their colleagues. When refused, the British knocked down at least one wall of the jail. Reports cite the rescue employed either a tank, several tanks, or armoured personnel carriers: Again, accounts are diverse. Everyone does agree though, there was helicopter support for the rescue operation, and at least one tank was later set afire by angry mobs, hurling stones and petrol bombs. Crowds had apparently been drawn to the jail by flying squads of rabble-rousers, blaring news of a killed policeman and the arrest of the British over car-mounted loudspeakers.

Word of the shooting spread through the city, already edgy because of the heightened bombing campaigns against religious sites and observances. (This week marks the beginning of the Karbala Festival, marking the birth of Imam Mohammed al-Mahdi in 868 A.D. on the Christian calendar. It's expected to draw as many as 3 million pilgrims, providing ample opportunities for car and suicide bombings.) These attacks have been cited by Iranian officials as a deliberate ploy by the Americans and their allies, ostensibly to justify the continuation of the occupation. It's a sentiment broadly shared in Iraq. 

Curiously, B.B.C. World Service Radio reports initially identified the car the SAS drove as being: "full of explosives and bomb making equipment." It's a quote this reporter is unable at this hour (S19 6pm pdt) to corroborate. [update (D20)
In fact, none among the several articles relating to this strange tale broach the questions: Why did the shooting start? Why were the men there? What was in the car?

Media emphasis is now quickly shifting to the block-buster rescue mission. An estimated 150 others held in the prison took the opportunity to escape custody. But, that too is a point made moot by counter-claims stating none escaped.

One thing is certain tonight: The relatively quiet British-Iraqi relationship in the south is fast deteriorating.

Also today, 38 year-old reporter Fakher Haider was found dead in Basra. His body showed signs of severe trauma. He was shot to death. Haider becomes the 55th journalist killed in Iraq since the fall of the Hussein regime.
