Když byla Agnes dítě, zeptala se jednou otce na jejich dlouhé procházce, zda věří v Boha. Otec odpověděl. "Věřím ve Stvořitelův computer." Ta odpověď byla tak podivná, že si ji dítě zapamatovalo. Podivné bylo nejen slovo computer, ale i slovo Stvořitel: otec totiž nikdy neřekl Bůh, ale vždycky Stvořitel, jako by chtěl omezit význam Boha jen na jeho inženýrský výkon. Stvořitelův computer: ale jak se člověk může dohovořit s computerem? Zeptala se proto otce, jestli se modlí. Řekl: "To je jako by ses modlila k Edisonovi, když ti přestane svítit žárovka."
Agnes si říká: Stvořitel dal do computeru disketu s podrobným programem a pak šel pryč. Že Bůh stvořil svět a pak ho nechal napospas opuštěným lidem, kteří obracejíce se k němu mluví do prázdna bez ozvěn, ta myšlenka není nová. Ale je něco jiného být opuštěn Bohem našich předků, a je něco jiného, opus-til-li nás Bůh - vynálezce kosmického computeru. Na jeho místě je tu program, který se v jeho nepřítomnosti nezadržitelně naplňuje, aniž by na něm kdokoli mohl cokoli změnit. Dát program do computeru: to neznamená, že budoucnost je do podrobností naplánována, zeje všechno napsáno "tam nahoře". V programu například nebylo udáno, že v roce 1815 bude bitva u Waterloo a že ji Francouzi prohrají, nýbrž jen to, že je člověk agresivní svou povahou, že válka je mu souzena a že technický pokrok ji bude činit čím dál strašnější. Všechno ostatní nemá z hlediska Stvořitele žádnou důležitost a je jen hrou variací a permutací obecně určeného programu, který není prorockou anticipací budoucnosti, nýbrž udává pouhé meze možností, uvnitř nichž je ponechána všechna moc náhodě.
