    Air lines 2000
A plane in polyethylene is inflated and deflated automatically every 15 seconds. The motion makes the wooden chair inside the machine land and take off.

    Pac-man 2002
Study in plaster of a complete skeleton of Pac-man, created by extrapolation from a comparative observation of a human skull and different predatory animal skulls.

    Phoenix 2002-2003
On may 21st at 19:30 pm, the Gentil Garçon gave a “hasty micro-concert” on this single-use piano. Each key, when pressed, engages a system based on a mechanical transmission and provokes the explosion of a glass. 4 of the 88 glasses stayed intact and among them, 2 where crushed with the hand. The splinters where kept and melted one year later in the shape of a powerful horn.

This artwork used the Internet search engine Google as a tool to recontextualise mass-media imagery in relation to it's textual counterpart. Working from a list of around 70 words, covering a wide range of references and pre-conceived notions, Google's image search feature was used to find the 20 most viewed images for each word, which were appropriated to create 60 second slide show-style videos.

This project was initially presented as a video installation for an exhibition in September/October 2004 at the G2 Gallery, Chicago.

Julia Steiner (*1982) studies visual design at the Hochschule der Künste in Berne. In the medium of drawing – and in terms both of technique and of content – she has developed a style very much of her own. She uses a brush to apply very dry gouache to the paper, which results in a subtle and varied structure. Dark and light, black and white, drawing and emptiness enter into a constant and interesting dialogue.

Although Steiner remains true to figuration, she nevertheless transports the viewer into a realm of dream and fantasy based not only on thoughts, memories and ideas, but also on scenes from international literature. She does not sketch out a composition in advance, but works spontaneously, with improvisation, and usually in large formats. This spontaneous working process is expressed in the dynamic-gestural character of her works. Although spaces emerge, they remain open and could be extended infinitely.

The sculpture is located in Terminal 5 in the atrium hall which leads to the British Airways First Class Lounges. The brief from British Airways was open and simple: to create a signature piece that will mark the entrance of the First Class Lounges and signify the transition between the busy shopping floor and the calm and serenity of the lounges.

We started to work on the metaphor of clouds as one’s flies, and the contrast which exists between the busy, hectic airport experience, and the calm, luminous and ethereal world which we discover as we fly through this dense layer.
Another of our inspiration came from the old electromagnetic flip-dots which were used in railways and airport signs from the mid 70s. Those signs, with their characteristic flicking noise which instantly reminds us of travel, represent to us a golden age of technology, when analogue and digital started to merge. The indicators, dots which can flip from one side to the other with an electric impulse, have a fantastic materiality, a physicality which more modern technologies often lack, de-materialised into the virtual. ...
