    ABSTRACT: This chapter presents one of the very rare exobiological hypotheses. The main thesis is that there could be life in the dark dune spots (DDSs) of the southern polar region of Mars, at latitudes between –60° and –80°. The spots have a characteristic annual morphological cycle and it is suspected that liquid water forms in them every year. We propose that a consortium of simple organisms (similar to bacteria) comes to life each year, driven by sunlight absorbed by the photosynthetic members of the consortium. A crucial feature of the proposed habitat is that life processes take place only under the cover of water ice/frost/snow. By the time this frost disappears from the dunes, the putative microbes, named Mars surface organisms (MSOs) must revert to a dormant state. The hypothesis has been worked out in considerable detail, it has not been convincingly refuted so far, and it is certainly testable by available scientific methods. We survey some of the history of, the logic behind, the testable predictions of, and the main challenges to the DDS-MSO hypothesis.

    Z blízkého průletu kolem Phobosu nebude nic. Kamera HRSC sice snímala, ale díky závadě v paměti se sekvence
    neuložily. Čas od času se tato chyba vyskytne (sonda má za sebou 12 let provozu), teď se to bohužel stalo při průletu.
    Naštěstí se zachovala data dvou dalších palubních zařízení ASPERA (Analyzer of Space Plasma and Energetic Atoms) a radaru
    MARSIS (Subsurface Sounding Radar/Altimeter). Vědecké týmy tyto data analyzují, výsledky ještě nejsou k dispozici.
    V letošním roce proběhnou ještě dva průlety: 4.7. (vzájemná vzdálenost bude cca 350 km) a 16.11. (+/- 127 km)

    Posádka Apollo 1 kráčí přístupovým ramenem do modulu (Grissom vpředu za ním Chaffee?).
    Tady se úplně naposled mohli rozhlédnout po krajině. Zbývá jim pár desítek minut života...
    Mrazí mě z toho, ale fotka je to úžasná.

    NASA's Mars rover, Opportunity just celebrated its 12th anniversary on Mars—a mission that was originally meant to last just 90 days. Although recently eclipsed in the news by its bigger brother Curiosity, Opportunity is still going strong and making valuable scientific discoveries. Launched into space in 2003, Opportunity bounced to a hole-in-one landing in a small crater on Mars' Meridiani Planum on January 25, 2004. It has since spent 4,270 Martian days, or sols, on the surface, slowly moving from target to target, exploring craters, meteorites, unusual rock formations, and finding evidence of past water activity. Over the past 144 months, Opportunity has taken more than 200,000 images, and driven a total of 26.50 miles (42.65 kilometers) across Mars—not bad for a mission designed to last only three months.
