VW's own board, in an anonymous internal "Belief Audit," rated the company near-terminal: six of nine called it existenzgefährdet, three "strained," none fine. All nine want the business model fundamentally rebuilt. The headline verdict: "develop in Germany, build in Europe, sell worldwide" no longer works.
Three things stand out. The diagnosis is mostly self-inflicted (Cariad software disaster, late and overpriced EVs, lost China) sitting on a structural base VW can't vote away — German labor plus post-gas/post-nuclear energy costs plus regulatory load. The fact that BCG, Roland Berger, and PwC are all separately checking the same paper is a tell: nobody trusts anyone's numbers, and the real fight is over which brand and which workforce eats the cuts. And "existenzgefährdet" is partly a tool — Blume needs IG Metall and Lower Saxony to swallow harder changes, so a board that has rated itself near-dead is harder to obstruct.
The broader read: when Europe's largest, most protected, most cash-rich industrial firm declares the make-here-sell-there model dead, that's a verdict on the continent's competitiveness, not just on Wolfsburg.
