‘The Troublemaker’ delves deep into the ideas and emotions behind the international wave of civil protest that has emerged in response to the unfolding climate crisis.

The pandemic has shown how fast and how far we can move when faced with a global threat. The film asks the simple question: if the science is right on climate change, what should you do?

Facing up to crisis, transforming yourself by overcoming a seemingly insurmountable threat, is THE archetypal story of human civilisation.

But this time the threat is global and may prove fatal.

Now that we understand more about what a ‘global crisis’ feels like, it can no longer be ignored. This is our opportunity to live life without lies, a life that offers both resilience and joy through the power of collective action.

Nejdřív je nutné, aby lidem došlo, jak moc je náš systém nefunkční (přinejmenším pokud jde o řešení klimatické krize). Zároveň nemám moc velkou důvěru, že jsou lidé schopní to pochopit. Nemyslím, že by lidé byli zlí, že mají raději svá auta než své děti. Spíš nejsou ochotní řešit tak bolestivý problém. Pokud by se podařilo to lidem vysvětlit, tak bych asi začal generální stávkou.

The intricate web of life and death which we call Soil Organic Matter (SOM) sustains us all, and researchers have found that more than half of the global soil carbon pool is a foot or more below the surface. It is vital for the health of our climate and our food security to build SOM. So what is it? It is the organic matter component of soil, as opposed to the inorganic rock component: the silt, sand, or clay.

There are two basic types of SOM: Particulate Organic Matter (OM), which is plant and animal detritus at various stages of decomposition, and Mineral-associated OM, which are the cells and tissues of living and dead soil microbes, as well as the substances that they synthesize.

You can think of Particulate OM as a checking account - Every week you deposit a paycheck and every week you have a lot of bills and expenses to pay. Particulate OM is lower in Nitrogen, but it is more bio-available to plants seeking nutrients.

Mineral-associated OM is more like a savings account - It has a higher Nitrogen content but that nutrient is locked up in bonds with soil minerals. It's important to build both accounts, but vital to increase the microbial activity in our soils in order to build Organic Matter for long-term carbon storage!

production came first with the peasants working the land to plant and harvest crops.

Distribution followed the harvest, as the sheriff collected the lord’s share. Part of this share was later monetised when the lord’s men sold it at some market.

Debt only emerged at the very last stage of the cycle when the lord would lend his money to debtors, the King often amongst them.

Capitalism reversed the order. Once labour and land had been commodified, debt was necessary before production even began. Landless capitalists had to borrow to lease workers, land and machines. Only then could production begin, yielding revenues whose residual claimant were the capitalists. Thus, debt powered capitalism’s early oeuvre. However, it took the second industrial revolution before capitalism could re-shape the world in its image

SHEFIK: varoufakis prave rika, ze ty bailoutovy a levny penize prave nejsou pouzivany k odpovidajicim investicim, ale k dalsimu podporeni ty financializace, coz vede k temhle bizar fenomenum, kdy trzni/financnicka realita neodpovida tomu, co se deje celkove ve spolecnosti. tzn. neni to podle nej primarne o tom, ze je emitovany velky mnozstvi penez, ale o tom, ze nejdou do realne potrebnejch investic a transformace na bezemisni infrastrukturu.

V posledních měsících vznikla řada pro Českou republiku relevantních studií předkládajících různé pohledy na možné dekarbonizační trajektorie.
Ve spolupráci s Výborem pro záležitosti Evropské unie Senátu Parlamentu ČR se uskuteční expertní kulatý stůl shrnující klíčové výstupy existujících studií a stejně tak i metodologická východiska, což umožní srovnání různých přístupů v širší perspektivě. To vše s přihlédnutím k očekávanému zvýšení evropských i českých emisních cílů do roku 2030.

The situation today in California isn’t yet quite as grim, although this week CalFire advised every citizen of the state — all 40 million of them — to be prepared to evacuate. Already, more than 100,000 already have. Over just the last seven days, 700,000 acres have burned in California — a number that would have been, in recent memory, a historically devastating year of fire. In just five days, more land has been burned than in all of 2019, and 500,000 of those acres are in and around the Bay Area. There, the Lightning Complex — in wildfire terminology, “complex” is when multiple blazes join forces — has alone burned 200,000 acres and is, at present, zero percent contained. The Complex could burn as many as a million acres, it’s been suggested—the state’s first “gigafire.” The lightning storms that set it off simultaneously ignited so many other wildfires the state authorities couldn’t keep track of all of them, just the 376 most significant ones. All told, more than ten thousand lightning strikes were recorded in a single day; the week saw 560 wildfires start. Big Basin Redwoods State Park has been burned through, prompting a conservation group to write, “We are devastated to report that Big Basin, as we have known it, loved it, and cherished it for generations, is gone.” These trees are between 800 and 1,500 years old. Some of them, older than Muhammad, had stood for a thousand years by the time Europeans first set foot in North America. The youngest of them are older than the Black Death, and precede the invention of the printing press by centuries. Reports yesterday had them “scorched but still standing.”

Two tropical systems expected to reach the Gulf of Mexico by early next week could simultaneously become hurricanes in an unprecedented event.
Meteorologists say residents from Texas to Florida need to prepare for Tropical Storm Laura and Tropical Depression Fourteen, as they could impact the region in the coming days.
"We could be looking at two landfalls in a matter of just a day or two of each other at the beginning to middle part of next week, which is really unprecedented when you are talking about potentially two hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico," said CNN Meteorologist Jennifer Gray.
The storms haven't yet entered the Gulf of Mexico but could intensify rapidly when they do. As of Friday evening, Gray says, there's still a lot of uncertainty.
