Ethical Acknowledgment of Soil Ecosystem Integrity amid Agricultural Production in Australia | Environmental Humanities | Duke University Press
    https://read.dukeupress.edu/environmental-humanities/article/12/1/267/165259

This article focuses on the concept of soil integrity and its significance for farmers’ ethical relationship to soils in everyday practice, using the case study of pasture cropping, an Australian form of agriculture that extends no-till methods to embrace ecological relationships within and beyond the soil. Prioritizing the integrity of soil ecosystems often requires reconceiving what soil is and should be. Soil can be difficult to see as ethically significant partly because it often appears as a granular bulk good, seemingly featureless and fungible. To counteract this, farmers who care for soil integrity use various heuristic and aesthetic strategies to render soil integrity more perceptible and intelligible. The author considers how a keener perception of soil integrity may enable greater attunement toward the soil condition, acknowledgement of soil distress, and thus ethical responsiveness. The article considers this through a broader discussion of phenomenological ethics.

Does animal dung and urine provide the N and P needed for humification? No. As explained above, the availabilities of N and the P are increased through the activation of microbial processes supported by plant root exudates. However, appropriate grazing management is required to optimise the exudation process. And because animals and soils have co-evolved, soil microbes respond to signals from shed animal hair, saliva, dung and urine, all of which stimulate soil biological activity and indirectly increase the availability of N and P. Do we need to replace the minerals exported in product? No. The minerals removed in farm products are a tiny fraction of the total amount present in soil. A standard soil test - even a test of totals - is a very poor indicator of what is actually present. X-ray diffraction (XRD) is the only method that provides a full mineralogical analysis of the soil. A tissue test is the best indicator of whether those minerals are actually getting into the plants. Again, pasture diversity and appropriate grazing management are the best means to ensure the soil microbiome is receiving the energy it needs to activate the biological processes that underpin the availability of essential minerals and trace elements - and of course, increase the level of stable soil carbon. All are linked.

To return to your question re Rattan Lal, the application of high rates of water-soluble N and/or P reduces root exudation, inhibiting the biological processes necessary for the acquisition of minerals and trace elements, resulting in mineral-deficient plants and animals. Rattan Lal was recently awarded the $250,000 World Food Prize. In previous years the award has gone to Monsanto, Syngenta and the European Federation of Biotechnology (genetically modified crops).

2020 Christine Jones - Biological Pathways to Carbon Rich Soil
    https://www.phwealth.co.nz/media/qd3pjqa2/2020-09-28-jones-edited-overview.pdf

Soil is by far the largest terrestrial sink for carbon. The world’s topsoils hold three times as much carbon as the vegetation. When subsoils are taken into account, that figure doubles. Despite their lower carbon concentrations, subsoil horizons contribute to more than half of global soil carbon stocks (6). An analysis of 2,700 soil profiles in global databases revealed the percentage of organic carbon in the top 20 cm - relative to the first metre - averaged 33%, 42%, and 50% for shrublands, grasslands and forests, respectively (6) By subtraction, if 42% of the carbon in the top metre of grassland soils is in the 0-20cm increment, then 58% is in the 20-100cm increment. In short, deep carbon matters. There is a need to reassess the shallow sampling depths used for calculating soil carbon stocks, particularly in light of the evidence for the responsiveness of deep soil carbon to changes in land use and vegetation

Průměrná šedesátiminutová videokonference emituje do ovzduší 150-1000 gramů oxidu uhličitého. Není to zrovna málo. A to si ještě stačíte odvézt nákup domů sami.

    ...

Pro začátek ale během videokonferencí vypněte obraz. Je to výhodné: nemusíte odklízet vlastní nepořádek v záběru kamery, debatovat on-line můžete klidně v županu. A hlavně, uhlíková stopa vaší virtuální rozpravy tím rázem poklesne o 96 %.

Got Climate Change? Kelp Can Help
    https://cleantechnica.com/2021/02/07/got-climate-change-kelp-can-help/

The key is kelp, which use the dissolved carbon dioxide in the water as a nutrient. The kelp can actually reduce the acidity of the water around it, creating a temporary “halo” area of improved water conditions that can benefit other sea life in the area — like blue mussels.

    ...

Not only does this give us two commercially viable crops, but it also allows us to increase the positive impact on our local ecosystem,” said Matthew Moretti, CEO of Bangs Island Mussels, a Maine farm that has been collaborating with the researchers. “In the face of a rapidly changing environment, this is even more important.”

New research challenges scientific orthodoxy on the role of grazing livestock in relation to emission reduction targets
    https://sustainablefoodtrust.org/...-of-grazing-livestock-in-relation-to-emission-reduction-targets/

the scheme involved cattle ranches and the very significant soil carbon gains made by them: 0.8% per year of organic matter; in other words double the 4 per 1000 target set by the French Minister Stéphane Le Foll at the COP21 Paris summit where he announced his ‘quatre per mille’ scheme.

If this level of soil organic matter gain can be verified through ongoing research and monitoring using evolving and ever more sophisticated techniques for measuring soil organic matter, this represents a very significant breakthrough. In combination with the new information from Professor Myles Allen of Oxford University on the reduced impact of methane on climate change, there is a compelling argument for the scientific community to reassess the role of holistic grazing systems involving ruminant livestock – which could make a very significant contribution towards reducing climate change impacts.

This potential is highlighted in the press release from Wilmot Farms, who have calculated that were these soil carbon gains to be replicated across all the cattle farming grasslands in Australia, it would have the potential to sequester just under one quarter of Australia’s total greenhouse gas emissions. It should also be emphasised that this is a net calculation which includes the counter benefit of the methane emissions from grazing animals, which makes it even more significant.

The press release states that, ‘In the farming and grazing context alone, it’s estimated that the widespread adoption of carbon-friendly practices could potentially sequester between 125 Mt and 374 Mt of CO2e per year, representing between 23% and 70% of Australia’s current total annual national greenhouse gas emissions.’
