Here we use the Eora MRIO database and Consumer Expenditure Surveys to quantify GHG emissions related to goods and services consumed by United States households between 1996 and 2019 - including construction of a synthetic dataset to estimate top 1% and top 0.1% household emissions. Top 1% households are of particular interest because their emissions have been largely missed or simplistically and inaccurately estimated in past analysis, yet they exert disproportionate political power in shaping U.S. climate policy. Results suggest significant GHG inequality across economic class and racial lines. In 2019, we estimate the U.S. top 0.1% had emissions (955 t CO2e) 57× higher than bottom decile U.S. households and 597× higher than an average low-income country household.

Z množství interních dokumentů a výzkumných prací již dříve vyplynulo, že Exxon věděl o nebezpečí globálního oteplování přinejmenším od 70. let 20. století, přičemž ostatní subjekty ropného průmyslu věděly o tomto riziku ještě dříve, přibližně od 50. let 20. století. Ty se proti vědeckým poznatkům důrazně a úspěšně mobilizovaly, aby zabránily jakýmkoli opatřením na snížení spotřeby fosilních paliv.

Nová studie však jasně ukázala, že vědci společnosti Exxon byli ve svých prognózách od 70. let minulého století až překvapivě přesní a předpovídali vzestupnou křivku globálních teplot a emisí oxidu uhličitého, která se téměř přesně shoduje s tím, co skutečně nastalo, když se svět ohříval tempem, které nebylo zaznamenáno po miliony let.

Vědci společnosti Exxon předpovídali, že v důsledku emisí plynů ohřívajících planetu při spalování ropy, uhlí a dalších fosilních paliv dojde ke globálnímu oteplení o zhruba 0,2 °C za desetiletí. Nová analýza, zveřejněná v časopise Science, konstatuje, že vědecké poznatky společnosti Exxon byly velmi kvalifikované a "prognózy byly rovněž v souladu s nezávislými akademickými a vládními modely a přinejmenším stejně kvalifikované".

Loss and damage is the “third pillar” of international climate governance alongside mitigation and adaptation. When mitigation and adaptation fail, losses and damages occur. Scholars have been reacting to international political discourse centred around governing actual or potential severe losses and damages from climate change. Large gaps exist in relation to understanding the underlying power dimensions, rationalities, knowledges, and technologies of loss and damage governance and science. We draw from a Foucauldian-inspired governmentality framework to argue there is an emerging governmentality of loss and damage. We find, among other things, that root causes of loss and damage are being obscured, Western knowledge and technocratic interventions are centred, and there are colonial presupposed subjectivities of Global South victims of climate change, which are being contested by people bearing the brunt of the climate crisis. We propose future directions for critical research on climate change loss and damage.
