When Narendranath Dutta (later Swami Vivekananda) crept near to Shri Ramakrishna Paramahansa at their second encounter and asked him "Can God be seen?" the great saint replied without hesitation:
"Of course God can be seen. In fact at this moment I see God more clearly than I see you. But, who wants to see God?
Every day people routinely shed potfuls of tears over their families and their material possessions, or their lack of either. But who is it weeps because he has not yet had a vision of the Divine?
When you long for the vision of God so much that the tears flow from your eyes, then know that God is not far from you!"
It is an interesting fact that Narendranath knew nothing of the Bhagavad-Gita until his English professor Dr. Hastie recommended it to him. And it was not until he was brought to his knees by the penury of his family that Narendranath would accept the Mother. And on his deathbed, when Narendranath was looking down upon the dying Master, he silently cried out in his mind the approximate equivalent of "Where is God in all of this suffering?"
And the Master opened his eyes as though Narendra had spoken aloud and said: After all this time you still doubt Me? The Master made feebly as if to touch his chest. as he habitually did when referring to himself directly. "He who was Rama, He who was Krishna is now in this body "Ramakrishna". And that not in your Vedic sense, either."
