In one of the most anticipated speeches at last weekend’s Climate Ambition Summit, Chinese leader Xi Jinping announced a new set of updated national climate targets for 2030.
Carbon Brief asked analyst Lauri Myllyvirta to take a close look at the details and he found that the pledge to “cut CO2 intensity of GDP by more than 65% from 2005 levels” could be the difference between China reducing, peaking or increasing its emissions this decade. If, by “more than 65%”, Xi were to mean 70%, then, as the chart above shows, it could see an overall reduction – with profound implications for keeping global warming below 2C.
