Climate change is real. It’s going to be devastating. It already is devastating, but it’s only getting warmed up,” says author Neal Stephenson, speaking from his home in Seattle on an especially hot day.

Global warming is at the heart of the 61-year-old science fiction author’s new novel, Termination Shock (Morrow, Nov.). The techno thriller is set in the not-too-distant future, when the effects of climate change—roaming droves of feral pigs, superstorms, global pandemics—have become so devastating that something drastic has to be done, immediately. Eccentric billionaire T.R. Schmidt, owner of a monstrously successful chain of truck stop restaurants, believes he’s just the man for the job. So, in an attempt to mitigate the problem, he builds a giant gun to shoot the cache of sulfur he’s been hoarding into space. That’s when things get weird.

For Termination Shock, though, Stephenson wanted to do more than predict a possible future: he wanted to shed light on an almost certain one—a future in which climate change has devastated the planet. Speaking just days after the UN released a report validating the novel’s premise—that humans are indisputably to blame for climate change and are also the only ones who can stop it—the author explained why writing about this topic felt so pressing.

“Climate change is going to lead to war,” he says. “It’s going to lead to refugee movements on a huge scale, and to mass extinctions, and all kinds of other disasters. These are all real possibilities that I think need to be kind of dragged out into the open and made part of our conversation.”

To ensure Termination Shock would have its intended impact, Stephenson chose the novel’s setting carefully. If it feels like the dystopia depicted could just as easily be tomorrow as a century into the future, that’s by design. Stephenson aims to set his stories in a sweet spot that feels futuristic yet contemporary.

With Termination Shock, Stephenson was faced with another balancing act. He had to juggle the overwhelming notion that we’ve essentially destroyed the planet beyond repair, while presenting a possible solution. To do so, he had to find a way to address, for the layperson, the potential benefits of using the solar geo-engineering technology discussed in the book. He wanted to distill the theoretical benefits of actually engaging that technology, and the potentially dire consequences of halting it.

As with all of the complex subjects Stephenson tackles, he was up for the challenge. “We’re in this predicament with climate change: it’s such a vast topic that it’s hard even for experts to wrap their heads around,” he says. “So to the extent that I can raise some questions and tell some stories around it, in a hopefully approachable way, maybe that has some value.”

Analytici odhadují, že ceny energií pro české domácnosti porostou v následujících měsících nejen u elektřiny a plynu, ale například také u uhlí. U elektřiny a plynu očekávají nejpozději na podzim kvůli vysokým velkoobchodním cenám růst cen u nezafixovaných produktů řádově až o 20 procent, což může znamenat, že lidé si připlatí až tisíce korun.

Hlavní ekonom Trinity Bank Lukáš Kovanda uvedl, že situaci na trhu ovlivní evropská politika, mimo jiné evropská zelená dohoda (Green Deal). „Evropská komise v balíčku, který navrhuje od července, uvádí, že v důsledku těchto politik by mohla padnout do energetické chudoby třetina obyvatel EU, tj. přes sto milionů lidí. V Česku by se tak mohlo jednat až o 3,5 milionu lidí,“ dodal.

Bez soucasnejch technologii by ale mnozi z nas byli davno mrtvi, nebo se ani nenarodili.

SHEFIK: Já nejsem zapřísáhlý odpůrce CCS. Jako byznys to určitě bude dobrej, spousta startupů, dotací, zájem médií. Viz svého času perpetuum mobile. Jen říkám, že k deklarovanému cíli to nepovede, výsledky budou žalostné, tohle je jedna z mála jistot klimatické krize. Jestli v to vkládáš své naděje, že nejsme tak v prdeli, jak to vypadá, tak to radši přehodnoť a orientuj se na něco jiného. Nevím, třeba geoinženýring, je to sice ruská ruleta, ale mohlo by to trochu pomoc, jestli to nebude jen zástěrka pro další spalování fosilu. Imho je lepší se smířit s osudem, stejně všichni umřeme.

To na mě moc nezapůsobilo...

SHEFIK: Hele na nedostatek představivosti si nestěžuju. Rád bych věřil, že CCS bude fungovat, nemysli si, že jsem zarytý skeptik. Ale termodynamické zákony žádný pokrok technologie neobede, sorry jako. CCS je drahé, protože chceš dělat z prdu kuličku. Řekni dětem, ať klidně kadí kdekoli v bytě, že to potom uklidíš najednou. Bude toho stejně, jako kdyby chodily na nočník, ale s výrazně vyšší entropií. A vyrábět z CO2 diamanty? To už je úplná haluz, máš stejný problém s entropií a ještě bys musel dodat nesmyslné množství energie navíc.

A recent attempted sale illustrates the increasing challenge of selling oil assets. When BP tried to sell two stakes in North Sea fields to Premier Oil, it slashed its price by two-thirds in negotiations, to $205 million, only to see the deal collapse entirely late last year when Premier hit financial difficulties.

BP Chief Executive Bernard Looney, who took office in February 2020, is gambling that BP can make the clean-energy transition much faster than its peers. Last year, he became the first major oil CEO to announce that he would purposely cut future production. He aims to slash BP's output by 40%, or about 1 million barrels per day, an amount equal to the UK's entire daily output in 2019. At the same time, BP would boost its capacity to generate electricity from renewable sources to 50 gigawatts, a 20-fold increase and equivalent to the power produced by 50 U.S. nuclear plants. To hit those targets, Looney plans $25 billion in fossil-fuel asset sales by 2025. That's equivalent to about 13% of the company's total fixed assets at the end of 2019. Under his watch, BP has already sold legacy projects worth about $15 billion. In addition to the Oman deal, Looney unloaded oil and gas fields in Alaska and the North Sea and sold off BP's entire petrochemical operation, which produced a $402 million profit in 2019.
