The politics of anticipation: On knowing and governing environmental futures
In this article we describe how the historical emergence and rise of future studies, since the founding issue of Futures in 1968, has been intricately connected to the emergence and development of environmental anticipation as discourse and practice. We trace a dialectical and inter-twined relationship between technologies of environmental anticipation and forecasting, and technologies of anti-environmentalist anticipation and counter-intervention, one which we argue shapes not only the contemporary politics of anticipation, but in a very material sense, the future conditions of biological and social life on Earth. In so doing we want to address the possible contributions that the field of futures studies can make to reimagining collective agency and ways of being on Earth, whilst reflecting critically upon its genealogical relations to the political reason and strategic horizons of powerful fossil fuel interests, from the crisis of the 1970s to the present. The article also offers a more in-depth contextualization to the other articles in this special issue of Futures on “The Politics of Environmental Anticipation”. The aim is to bring to the fore the role that social scientists play in environmental anticipation − i.e. drawing attention to the fact that the future could always have been otherwise.

‘It felt like a funeral’: William Shatner reflects on voyage to space | William Shatner | The Guardian
    https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2022/oct/11/it-felt-like-a-funeral-william-shatner-reflects-on-voyage-to-space

“Everything I had thought was wrong. Everything I had expected to see was wrong,” he wrote. “I had thought that going into space would be the ultimate catharsis of that connection I had been looking for between all living things – that being up there would be the next beautiful step to understanding the harmony of the universe.”

The Canadian, who captivated the world in his role as Captain James Kirk of Star Trek’s USS Enterprise, broke down in tears upon landing, describing having had “the most profound experience I can imagine”. “I hope I never recover from this,” he said at the time. “I’m so filled with emotion about what just happened. It’s extraordinary, extraordinary

But a year after touching down back to Earth, Shatner wrote in the excerpt: “I discovered that the beauty isn’t out there, it’s down here, with all of us. Leaving that behind made my connection to our tiny planet even more profound.”

“It was among the strongest feelings of grief I have ever encountered. The contrast between the vicious coldness of space and the warm nurturing of Earth below filled me with overwhelming sadness.

“Every day, we are confronted with the knowledge of further destruction of Earth at our hands: the extinction of animal species, of flora and fauna … things that took 5bn years to evolve, and suddenly we will never see them again because of the interference of mankind. It filled me with dread.

“My trip to space was supposed to be a celebration; instead, it felt like a funeral.”

More heat than life : the tangled roots of ecology, energy, and economics
    Author:Jeremy Walker (Author)
Summary:"We live in a world of rapid, irreversible environmental change. The interplay of fire, life, atmosphere and land now constrain and propel humanity's destiny. How have we arrived at this situation? Jeremy Walker presents a fascinating, insightful argument that the answer lies in the historical tensions between ecology and economics in broader political debates about resource use and fossil fuel combustion."--David Bowman, Professor of Pyrogeography and Fire Science, Director of the Fire Centre Research Hub, University of Tasmania, Australia "Neoliberal proposals for re-organizing the global economy rose to prominence in parallel with the emergence of a consciousness of the global economy's material limits. Jeremy Walker has written the first book devoted to the fraught relationship between neoliberal economics and ecology--an essential contribution to today's most pressing discussions." --Quinn Slobodian, Associate Professor of History, Wellesley College, Massachusetts, USA "Blazing a trail between photosynthesis and pyrotechnology, Walker guides us masterfully through the making of today's global thermo-industrial catastrophe." --Nigel Clark, Professor, Chair of Social Sustainability, Lancaster Environment Centre, Lancaster University, UK This book traces the interacting histories of the disciplines of ecology and economics, from their common origin in the ancient Greek concept of oikonomia, through their distinct encounters with energy physics, to the current obstruction of neoliberal economics to responses to the ecological and climate crisis of the so-called Anthropocene. Reconstructing their constitution as separate sciences in the era of fossil-fuelled industrial capitalism, the book offers an explanation of how the ecological sciences have moved from a position of critical collision with mainstream economics in the 1970s, to one of collusion with the project of permanent growth, in and through the thermal crisis of the biosphere. Jeremy Walker is Senior Lecturer in Social and Political Sciences and a member of the Climate Justice Research Centre at the University of Technology Sydney. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (University of New South Wales), a Bachelor of Communications (Social Inquiry, Hons, UTS) and a PhD (History and Philosophy of Science, UTS)

    Trochu k Nemecku

Germany is known as a leader in energy transition, but the country keeps falling short of meeting stated objectives. While attention has been high on climate change related policy leadership, the competing domestic alliances in the field of energy transition have received scant attention. In Germany, the strong momentum of the conversion to renewable energy has been stalled in the second half of the 2010s. Enabled by an increasing weight of neoliberal economic concerns, traditional energy coalitions have managed to reshape the path of energy transition. In this article three competing discourse coalitions are introduced to examine their constituencies and projects in the field of energy and politics. It focuses on radical ecological forces around the Öko-Institut, environmental modernization capacities linked to Green Budget Germany and fossil interest groups intersecting with neoliberal academic and partisan think tanks. As such, the article opens a view on multiple contestations over Germany’s Energiewende.

Rád bych vám představil projekt https://klimapedia.cz/, což je diplomová práce Alexandra Zamouřilová (v oboru mediální ilustrace). Vyšli jsme z klimatické výstavy, kterou jsme vytvořili před rokem a rozšířili jsme to o více informací a obrázků, já jsem psal text, Alex dělala zbytek.

In this essay, we will discuss a novel macroeconomic theory in relation to engendering a decolonial degrowth transformation, i.e. Modern Monetary Theory (also known as MMT). We hereby tap into a broader ongoing discussion on how to pay for a social ecological transformation when rich nations aren’t able to grow anymore.

Winds of Change Drive "Alarming" Rate of Ocean Warming - CleanTechnica
    https://cleantechnica.com/2022/10/07/winds-of-change-drive-alarming-rate-of-ocean-warming/

Researchers from UNSW Sydney say changes to strong, large-scale wind patterns are causing western boundary currents in the Southern Hemisphere to rapidly warm — transforming weather and habitats across the world.

The western boundary currents of the ocean — which includes the East Australian Current — transport large amounts of heat towards Earth’s poles. These currents are crucial in moderating global coastal climates. In the past few decades, their poleward extension regions have warmed two to three times hotter than the global average, creating ocean “hotspots” — but no one knew why these regions were warming so fast.
    ...
These changes are leading to a redistribution of heat, dissolved gases and nutrients across the world,” Dr Li said. “Which is changing local weather patterns and marine ecosystems.”

teosku nahled do problematiky novy generace modelu a s tim, ze jejich cast ukazuje vyrazne vyssi klima sensitivitu (dobra zprava: podle vseho tak vysoka swnzitivita neni)

“In the most recent round of modelling, CMIP6, a subset of about 20% of the climate models have very high climate sensitivity, whereby doubling CO2 concentrations would lead to 5 or more degrees Celsius increases,” explains Hausfather, who is lead author of the piece.

“We now have a conflicting situation. On the one hand, the new generation of models with this very hot subset is sort of pushing the overall average up. Yet, at the same time, there is broad scientific evidence that climate sensitivity can be narrowed down. Some of these very high sensitivity values of about 5 degrees Celsius, and the very low sensitivity values of below 2 degrees are, basically, highly unlikely,” says Hausfather.

In recent studies, the “hot models” have even been shown to be ineffective at reproducing past temperatures, a common method used to test their reliability and accuracy. This has cast further doubt on the model democracy approach, whereby all models are given equal weighting when establishing future warming parameters.
