UK harvests of important crops could be down by nearly a fifth this year due to the unprecedented wet weather farmers have faced, increasing the likelihood that the prices of bread, beer and biscuits will rise.

Analysis by the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) has estimated that the amount of wheat, barley, oats and oilseed rape could drop by 4m tonnes this year, a reduction of 17.5% compared with 2023.

The warnings come as farmers have borne the brunt of the heavy rainfall and bad weather experienced over the winter, with the UK experiencing 11 named storms since September.

In England, there was 1,695.9mm of rainfall between October 2022 and March 2024, the wettest 18-month period since records began in 1836.

This has resulted in planted crops either being flooded or damaged by the wet weather, or farmers not being able to establish crops at all.

Collapse remains taboo in conventional discourse because it denies the legitimacy of existing power structures. Hungary’s history, and its location at the edges of Western power, gives it a certain freedom of thought. How else can you explain that the conference was hosted by the National University of Public Service? In his opening talk, the rector of the university shared rather matter-of-factly that “the goal of global sustainability will give way to the goal of local resilience,” and that the role of the state and its public servants was to empower local communities in the face of social-political breakdown. I simply cannot imagine that type of discourse coming from the leadership of any American university.

Extreme temperatures were reported across the Sahel, including in Senegal, Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria and Chad. In many of these countries power cuts occurred during the heat episode, making it especially difficult for the population to cope with the extreme temperatures.

Heatwaves are arguably the deadliest type of extreme weather event and while the death toll is often underreported and not known until months after the event, a surge in hospital admissions and deaths were reported from the Gabriel Touré hospital in Bamako, Mali between 1-4 April (Bahati, 2024).

The hospital recorded 102 deaths over the four-day period, which is significantly more than expected – in April 2023, the hospital recorded 130 deaths over the entire month (JolibaFM, 2024). While statistics for the cause of death have not been reported, around half were over the age of 60, and the hospital reports that heat likely played a role in many of the deaths. Furthermore, up to 44 bodies were buried in one cemetery in Bamako on Friday 5 April after the weekly service (DW 2024).

To estimate the influence that human-caused climate change has had on the extreme heat since the climate was 1.2°C cooler, we combine climate models with observations. Observations and models both show that heatwaves with the magnitude observed in March and April 2024 in the region would have been impossible to occur without the global warming of 1.2°C to date.

Ta podstatnější část té věty zejména ve vztahu k biosféře je ta spotřeba surovin a využití půdy, znečištění vodních toků a půdy aj.

Také by do toho šlo zahrnout téma hormonů, antibiotik, a to jak jsou zvířecí koncentrační tábory skvělým místem pro nemoci, ale od toho je tu téma "viry | epidemie | pandemie..."

PALEONTOLOG: Ani netvrdím opak i ve skupinách lovců a sběračů byla rostlinná strava celkem obvyklá a zastávala značnou část, ale to bychom museli řešit případ od případu a ještě nám k tomu stejně chybí pořádné důkazy, takže se spíše omlouvám za mé frázování a upravím na "v historii moderního lidstva" :)

TADEAS: Člověk by čekal, že konkrétně tento EU Restoration zákon nemá proč být kontroverzní, ale asi to byl jen "curse of knowledge" z mé strany, když jsem viděl jaký rozruch to udělalo a jak se musel upravit - a i tak možná neprojde.

"Zatím" nám to zemědělství bez ohledu na nic a nikoho "funguje", dokud ropa a syntetické hnojení a pesticidy aj. tečou a jsou ekonomicky dostupné. To, že ta organická stránka mizí, nebo se z půdy stává prach se nijak neřeší.
Musím říct, že si pamatuji jak jsem byl zhnusen, a stále jsem, po zjištění jaká hrstka lidí tu za tímto byznysem stojí - od produkce techniky, sadby, samotné množství pachtované půdy, tak hlavně po petrochemický průmysl. Netřeba jmenovat :)

Co v této diskuzi obecně také chybí a hádám, že se ať už média nebo politici bojí to zmínit, jsou naše stravovací návyky.
Mít 2-3x denně maso, 365 dní v roce je něco v historii lidstva unikátního a absolutně nesmyslného z hlediska spotřeby surovin, vody, půdy.. a to nezmiňuji etiku, chápu, že tam to má každý nastavené tak trochu jinak.
