    Abstract
    Action to tackle the complex and divisive issue of climate change will be strongly influenced by public perception. Online social media and associated social networks are an increasingly important forum for public debate and are known to influence individual attitudes and behaviours – yet online discussions and social networks related to climate change are not well understood. Here we construct several forms of social network for users communicating about climate change on the popular microblogging platform Twitter. We classify user attitudes to climate change based on message content and find that social networks are characterised by strong attitude-based homophily and segregation into polarised “sceptic” and “activist” groups. Most users interact only with like-minded others, in communities dominated by a single view. However, we also find mixed-attitude communities in which sceptics and activists frequently interact. Messages between like-minded users typically carry positive sentiment, while messages between sceptics and activists carry negative sentiment. We identify a number of general patterns in user behaviours relating to engagement with alternative views. Users who express negative sentiment are themselves the target of negativity. Users in mixed-attitude communities are less likely to hold a strongly polarised view, but more likely to express negative sentiment towards other users with differing views. Overall, social media discussions of climate change often occur within polarising “echo chambers”, but also within “open forums”, mixed-attitude communities that reduce polarisation and stimulate debate. Our results have implications for public engagement with this important global challenge.

    "Podle ní za globální oteplování mohou jen zvyšující se atmosférické koncentrace CO2, a to přesto, že z podrobnějších výsledků ledovcových analýz za posledních 420 tis. let vyplynula opačná příčinná závislost (koncentrace CO2 se zvyšovala až po zvýšení teploty).
    Je třeba naplno říci, že obrácení příčinných souvislostí a označení emisí CO2 za hlavní příčinu globálního oteplování se nezakládá na žádných vědecky naměřených datech, nýbrž je to pouhá neprokázaná hypotéza, založená na korelaci mezi globální teplotou a koncentrací CO2. Tím, že se této hypotézy chopili v Mezivládním panelu pro změnu klimatu (IPCC) a pomocí klimatických modelů, založených ovšem na nedokázaném příčinném vztahu, že růst emisí CO2 povede k růstu oteplování, začalo období strašení lidí a tím i získávání výzkumných prostředků na neopodstatněný výzkum."

His detailed analysis serves not only as a guide to reading the global warming skeptics, but also as a model for assessing the state of climate science. With attention to the complexities of climate-related phenomena across a range of areas—from Arctic sea ice to the Antarctic ice sheet—The Lomborg Deception also offers readers an enlightening review of some of today’s most urgent climate concerns.

    Friel’s book is the first to respond directly to Lomborg’s controversial research as published in The Skeptical Environmentalist (2001) and Cool It: The Skeptical Environmentalist’s Guide to Global Warming (2007). His close reading of Lomborg’s textual claims and supporting footnotes reveals a lengthy list of findings that will rock climate skeptics and their allies in the government and news media, demonstrating that the published peer-reviewed climate science, as assessed mainly by the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, has had it mostly right—even if somewhat conservatively right—all along. Friel’s able defense of Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth against Lomborg’s repeated attacks is by itself worth an attentive reading.

    JunkScience: investigating pseudoscience disinformation in the Russian Internet Research Agency tweets

    Recent research has identified anti-vaccination propaganda in the so-called Russian Troll Tweets strongly associated with the 2016 US Presidential election. This study builds on this: hypothesising that if vaccination content was found in the sample, the Russia Tweets would be likely to contain other science content, and perhaps, similar pseudo or anti-science messages. As well as vaccination, climate change, genetically modified organisms, Ebola, flat Earth beliefs (flat Earthism) and Zika were found in the Russia tweets. Genetically modified organisms and flat Earthism appear to have been camouflage content - tweeted at similar rates to other Twitter users - while climate change, Ebola, Zika and vaccination appear to have been emphasised beyond the background rate for strategic disinformation purposes.

    takes us back to the origins of “fossil neoliberalism” in the 1930s, when links between the Australian economist Torleiv Hytten and the Australian members of the heavily thermoindustrial International Chamber of Commerce were developed. Hytten was invited to the first meeting of the Mont Pelerin Society and became the fi rst Australian member in 1951. He worked closely with the fi rst neoliberal Australian think tank, the Institute of Public Aff airs, founded in 1943 to oppose the Labor Party agenda. Another global dimension is uncovered in the history of the Murdoch media empire, which also originated in Australia. Although not in agreement with neoliberal agendas from the beginning, Murdoch developed a close alliance with fossil capital in the 1970s to oppose the resource-nationalist agenda of the short-lived Whitlam Labor government. The extraordinary mobilization of resources to defeat strong ecological and nationalization agendas in the primary sector explains the number of neoliberal business activists, think tanks, and dedicated commercial consultancies organized from the 1970s onward in Australia. A self-described “greenhouse mafi a” relies on old think tanks such as the Institute of Public Aff airs and on new ones, such as the somewhat more conciliatory Centre for Independent Studies, which emphasizes economic approaches to all policy questions, rather thandenying climate change. Walker points to the dramatic increase of Australian vulnerability in the face of climate change–related fi res and droughts, which at some point in the future may be considered indicators of the Pyrrhic victories won by fossil neoliberalism in Australia since the 1970s.
