this slide basically sums up the thesis of Soil4Climate in a single composite image.

During the coevolution of grasslands and ungulates during the last 30 million years, approximately 2 trillion (yes, trillion) tons of carbon were sequestered out of the atmospheric (lowering concentrations from 1300 to under 300 parts per million). A significant part of this went into a new type of soil, called mollisols, which is the soil associated with grasslands, ruminants and "C4" grasses (maize, sugar cane, millet, sorghum, bluestem). This is why there is approximately 2 trillion tons of carbon in the soils of the world today. Without the coevolution of ruminants and C4 grasses, the current climate regime that made human evolution possible in the first place would not have come into existence. To get back to a safe climate (approximately 280 ppm CO2), 260 billion tons of carbon will need to be sequestered back into soil. Of course, restoring that soil also improves small water cycles which provides regional cooling in addition to other ecological enhancements. All this is possible, but only through restoration of degraded grasslands with proper grazing, and, in concert with restoration of forests and wetlands.

„Má tendenciu amplifikovať, to znamená zhoršovať všetky následné krátkodobé krízy. Všetky ďalšie koronakrízy, alebo iné finančné, ekonomické, akékoľvek ďalšie krízy, ktoré prídu do nových fyzikálnych podmienok budúcej klímy, budú mať pravdepodobne horšie a citlivejšie dopady,“ myslí si klimatológ.

R.Kubala: Co mi v debatě o jádru a přehradách chybí. Je to v první řadě politická a mocenská záležitost, nikoliv energetická a hydrologická.

Rupert Read o Planet of Humans

"Our own reluctant view is that, even so, civilisation is clearly at present on a trajectory to collapse, primarily due to the likely near-term failure of key life support systems and of human systems that depend upon them (notably, the food-supply system), and that this process appears already to be underway. There hasn’t been enough honesty about this in the environmental movement to date, nowhere near enough. The film is right to suggest that far too often it’s been assumed that green tech (plus depoliticised individual action) can somehow save us.
It is going to take a vast, rapid, widespread transformation in systems and mindsets to prevent collapse. The post-Coronavirus reset is almost certainly our last chance to do this (and there are already worrying signs that that last chance is being missed), for these reset-opportunities don’t come along every year nor even every decade.
Our only remaining choice is whether we carry on business as usual and face catastrophic societal breakdown, (from sustained food shortages and/or energy outages, for example), or whether we consciously effect an energy descent in parallel with the rapid expansion of local food production. It’s a choice between remaining naively optimistic (i.e. unconscious) while the economic and energy mirages just about hold together for a while longer, or using this last window of opportunity to effect a transition which creates some genuine long-term resilience.

Learning is not enough: Diminishing marginal revenues and increasing abatement costs of wind and solar - ScienceDirect
    https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0960148120304079

The economics of wind and solar generation face two opposing drivers. Technological progress leads to lower costs and both wind and solar have shown dramatic price reductions in recent decades. At the same time, adding wind and solar lowers market electricity prices and thus revenue during periods when they produce energy. In this work, we analyze these two opposing effects of renewable integration: learning and diminishing marginal revenue, investigated using a model that assumes the status quo with regards to generation technology mix and demand. Our modeling results suggest that reduction in revenue from market forces may offset or even outpace technological progress. If deployed on current grids without changes to demand response, storage or other integrating technologies, the cost of mitigating CO2 with wind will increase and will be no cheaper in the future than it is today for solar. This study highlights the need to deploy grid technologies such as storage and new transmission in order to integrate wind and solar in an economically sustainable manner.

Solar costs set to continue falling according to ITRPV roadmap – pv magazine International
    https://www.pv-magazine.com/...04/28/solar-costs-set-to-continue-falling-according-to-itrpv-roadmap/

The learning rate of photovoltaics – the speed at which price declines accelerate with wider deployment of the technology – reached 23.5% in 2019, according to the VDMA.

The authors of the latest ITRPV document predict the learning rate for PV will continue at a similar speed in the years ahead, leading to further price declines, thanks to measures such as the use of better, larger solar wafers; optimization of front and rear cells; better module lay-outs; bifacial cell deployment; new cell types; and improved module technology.

The latest ITRPV estimates there is more than 200 GW of solar module production capacity worldwide and the report’s authors expect the figure to continue rising.

The roadmap update estimates module costs fell 10% last year – for both mono and multicrystalline products – and cell costs retreated 20%. The average monocrystalline solar module price fell from $0.39 per Watt-peak in 2018 to $0.24 this year, according to the ITRPV update. Multicrystalline products fell from $0.31 to $0.21 over the same period, according to the VDMA.

Investors blast EU’s omission of oil from ESG disclosures
    https://www.ft.com/...de6-c4d4-4f1b-8dc4-c4490e670216?segmentid=acee4131-99c2-09d3-a635-873e61754ec6

Under draft proposals for the EU’s sustainable disclosure regime, the European authorities responsible for banking, insurance and securities markets define fossil fuels as only applying to “solid” energy sources such as coal and lignite.

This means asset managers and other financial groups would have to follow tougher disclosure requirements for holdings in coal producers than for oil and gas company exposure.

The huge rise in popularity of ESG investing over the past decade has prompted regulators to take measures to confront the risk of greenwashing.

The latest EU proposals represent a significant watering down of its ambitious sustainable disclosure rules, which aim to give end investors clear information on the environmental, social and governance risks of their funds.
