Investors are threatening to sue the Czech government over planned cuts to solar power subsidies, the latest dispute highlighting how Europe’s cash-strapped governments are struggling to finance the bloc’s green transition.

Three solar developers have warned Prague about possible lawsuits if the government goes ahead with plans to retroactively lower subsidies for photovoltaic installations connected to the power grid as far back as 2009

🇨🇿 The Czech government succumbed to the pressure and withdrew the long-term hashtag#climate strategy from its agenda, along with the updated hashtag#necp. Both are now being rewritten to ensure that all the sharper teeth they had are pulled out.

This is bad.

hashtag#Czechia is 🤯 mindblowingly 🤯 one of the LARGEST per capita historical contributors to the hashtag#greenhouse effect.

👷 It has some of the most energy-intensive industries in the EU, with energy demand still heavily reliant on hashtag#coal. Equally concerning, Czech political leadership has not, according to many critics, delivered a single major structural reform in over a decade. And recently, when sh*it really hit the fan, we were not able to save human lives from covid-related deaths or sky-rocketing energy costs. Because it would hurt some businesses.

With THAT track record, how on Earth are we hoping to transform the entire economy, in a fast and fair manner? 🤯

Success isn’t just about implementing the right set of hashtag#mitigation measures—it’s about ensuring that these solutions truly improve people’s lives. Without a clear focus on what people actually need for a good life, there’s a real risk of wasting resources on decarbonization efforts that don’t enhance well-being. A more thoughtful approach, centered around hashtag#sufficiency, would direct resources toward hashtag#sustainable technologies that both cut hashtag#emissions and improve quality of life.

Jak uvádí Pavel Zahradníček z CzechGlobe na svém účtu X, máme za sebou nejteplejší zimu v Brně za celou dobu měření s odchylkou +4,6°C oproti období 1961-1990. Únor byl naprosto nevídaným extrémem s odchylkou 7,6°C a oproti druhému pořadí byl vyšší o více než dva stupně. Poslední výrazně chladná zima byla v roce 2006 a únor v roce 2018.

The Czech steel industry is unprepared for decarbonisation, not only technologically but also financially, making it difficult to implement the EU’s decarbonisation plans, experts say.

Experts polled by the Czech News Agency (CTK), also agreed that the state lacks green electricity, hydrogen and other resources – all elements necessary to meet EU plans to be carbon neutral and effectively achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

There are options for low-emission steel production, including replacing coke with hydrogen as a reducing agent or making steel from scrap in an electric arc furnace.

However, there is not enough scrap to meet all demand. The production process requires large amounts of electricity, the price of which has risen enormously in recent years, Daniel Urban, chairman of the Czech Steel Union, told CTK.

Summer 2023. 2 young filmmakers travelled through Europe visiting seed producers at their workplaces and experiencing first-hand how important it is to preserve this diversity in Europe. The short documentary gives a voice to these small-scale seed producers and seed savers from across Europe, with beautiful footage shot in Ireland, Luxembourg, France, Italy, Austria and the Czech Republic.

For diversity on our plates and in nature, we also need diversity in seeds. However, when we look at the selection available in supermarkets, including in the vegetable aisle, it quickly becomes clear that everything looks the same, almost all the time and all year round. Why is that? Because large corporations have power over the market. Now, however, EU seed legislation is being reformed - a chance to save seed diversity.

The party wants to extract more oil and gas from the North Sea and stop building wind turbines and solar farms. It also wants to abolish the Dutch climate law and leave the Paris agreement on climate change.

Its manifesto says that the climate has always changed and that the Netherlands – 26% of which lies below sea level – can adapt to further changes. “We will stop the hysterical reduction of CO2 , with which we, as a small country, mistakenly think we can save the climate.”

The Dutch are among the biggest polluters in the world, and also in Europe. Per person, the Netherlands pumped more planet-heating gas into the atmosphere in 2021 than all other EU member states bar Estonia, the Czech Republic, Ireland and Luxembourg.

Česká zemědělská produkce zažila za posledních 2 000 let výrazné extrémy, které zahrnují období, pro něž neexistuje analogie ani v současnosti. To je hlavní závěr článku od Maxe Torbensona, který s týmem dalších odborníků rekonstruoval hydroklimatické podmínky vegetačního období na J ČR a SV Rakouska na základě izotopů uhlíku a kyslíku v letokruzích stromů.
Potvrdil mj. výraznou suchou periodu v rámci středověké klimatické anomálie (920-1000) i na poč. 16. stol., jakož i vlhká období v průběhu 3., 5. a 7. stol. Dlouhodobě pak směřuje náš region k současným teplejším a sušším podmínkám.

Central European agroclimate over the past 2,000 years
Central Europe has experienced a sequence of unprecedented summer droughts since 2015, which had considerable effects on the functioning and productivity of natural and agricultural systems. Placing these recent extremes in a long-term context of natural climate variability is, however, constrained by the limited length of observational records. Here, we use tree-ring stable oxygen and carbon isotopes to develop annually resolved reconstructions of growing season temperature and summer moisture variability for central Europe during the past 2,000 years. Both records are independently interpolated across the southern Czech Republic and northeastern Austria to produce explicit estimates of the optimum agroclimatic zones, based on modern references of climatic forcing. Historical documentation of agricultural productivity and climate variability since 1090 CE provides strong quantitative verification of our new reconstructions. Our isotope records not only contain clear expressions of the Medieval (920-1000 CE) and Renaissance (early 16th century) droughts, but also the relative influence of temperature and moisture on hydroclimatic conditions during the first millennium (including previously reported pluvials during the early 3rd, 5th, and 7th centuries CE). We conclude, Czech agricultural production has experienced significant extremes over the past 2,000 years, which includes periods for which there are no modern analogues.

In the early hours of Tuesday morning the EU became the first big economy to legislate for a “green tariff” on imports, to be levied on goods that are produced with high carbon dioxide emissions.

The carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) means that countries which fail to green their industries will soon face a new threat: an effective carbon tax that will penalise those hoping to profit from high-carbon activities, and force them to clean up.

The system will be applied at first to iron and steel, cement, fertilisers, aluminium, electricity, hydrogen and some chemicals.

Jozef Síkela, minister of industry and trade of the Czech Republic, who led the negotiations in the EU parliament, said: “The carbon border adjustment mechanism is a key part of our climate action. This mechanism promotes the import of goods by non-EU businesses into the EU which fulfil the high climate standards applicable in the 27 EU member states. This will ensure a balanced treatment of such imports and is designed to encourage our partners in the world to join the EU’s climate efforts.”

Je tam obrovsky mnozstvi rozdilu, ale to co je spojuje je mira efektivity (at uz prace, nebo vyuziti materialu v totalu, ne jednotlivych pripadech).

Diky efektivite jsou pak volnejsi rezimy, ktery zaroven deleguji odpovednost nize (i se vsim spatnym, chybami a nedokonalostmi) ve vsem na dlouhy trati rychlejsi (tedy vcetne cerpani zdroju) cimz ale nikdo netvrdi, ze je v kazdou svoji chvili dokonalejsi nez situace, kterou si dokazeme zidealizovat podle vlastnich, napr. moralnich hodnot. Nic neni v zadnou chvili dokonale, zadny clovek, zadne chovani, zadny proces. Jde jen o uhel pohledu a casove meritko.

Root cause klimaticke krize je dle meho nazoru jinde. V procesech, ktere volime, ve vyrobcich, ktere volime, v rozhodnutich, ktere delame.

To je a bude nezavisle na politicko-trznim rezimu, jako takovem (az na ty rozhodnuti, pac ty souvisi se vzdelanim). Rezim nastavuje primarne efektivitu a rychlost.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, visiting Prague on Monday, said that the question of how the European electricity market can be redesigned “so that we no longer have to bear these high prices we are currently seeing” took up much of his meeting with Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala, whose country currently holds the EU’s rotating presidency. He said that “we will act together quickly.”

“It is necessary for us to make structural changes that contribute to prices sinking again quickly and there being a sufficient offer” of electricity, Scholz said at a news conference. He added that “there is great readiness to change something, and that seems to me to be very much mutual among the heads of state and government in Europe.”

kdyz jsem se snazila to klima resit, mirne jsem slysela ruzne drby o czech globe institutu, jako ze ti klimatologove tam nepovazuji za svuj ukol nebo svou zodpovednost snazit se o nastoleni nejakych politik ve spolecnosti. oni jsou vedci. jejich vystupem jsou grafy.

asi napisu trivialitu, ale to je proste slabe misto oddelenosti vedy od byznysu. pripomina mi to jednak povahu socialismu (nikdo se nijak zvlast nesnazil o prosazeni nejakych inovaci, protoze nebyl duvod), jednak atmosferu na univerzite (akademicka sfera neni byznys, a neni uplne snadny snazit se prosadit inovace, protoze neni duvod)

co je to ten duvod. korporace dokazou silne optimalizovat, protoze vsechno se da prepocitat na zisk nebo ztratu. nejlepsi inzenyri vymysli, jak usetrit to ci ono. podobne by se daly nasadit armady inzenyru a projektovych manageru na usili usetrit emise. to uz ale neni vedecky ukol. vedci v tomto nepomuzou, vyzkum je uplne neco jineho nez vyvoj, exekuce, skalovani.

vlady maji k dispozici vedce, protoze z historickych duvodu se veda plati z verejnych rozpoctu. ale nemaji k dispozici inzenyry a projektove managery. zaroven nemuzou dat takove pobidky (uhlikova dan, ..), aby se firmy na to vrhly samy ze vsech sil.
aby mnozstvi usetrenych emisi bylo to nejdulezitejsi cislo ve ctvrtletni uzaverce.

je to jako kdyby zdravotnictvi bylo cele soukrome, vlady by na doktory mely jen minimalni vliv a pro lecebne firmy by nebylo rentabilni lecit kovid. epidemiolog muze tak akorat stale znovu vydavat svoje grafy. ale pak tam musi byt nekdo jinej, pro koho pocet usetrenych smrti je to nejdulezitejsi cislo ve ctvrtletni uzaverce

cina ma armadu statnich inzenyru a manageru, takze muze urcity veci udelat asi snadneji.

zaroven ty zapadni firmy maji fakt velkej inovacni potencial, protoze jsou zvykly konat bez toho, co jim k tomu stat rika ... akorat proste nemaji duvod. musk ted psal ze asi zacne tezit lithium, protoze to potrebuje. jako WTF? co vsechno jeste hodla delat?
