It also shows some wealthy nations are questioning paying more to poorer states to move to greener technologies.
This "lobbying" raises questions for the COP26 climate summit in November.
The leak shows countries pushing back on UN recommendations for action, just days before they will be asked at the summit to make significant commitments to slow down climate change and keep global warming to 1.5 degrees.

Building upon recent work on other major fossil fuel companies, we report new archival research and primary source interviews describing how Total responded to evolving climate science and policy in the last 50 years. We show that Total personnel received warnings of the potential for catastrophic global warming from its products by 1971, became more fully informed of the issue in the 1980s, began promoting doubt regarding the scientific basis for global warming by the late 1980s, and ultimately settled on a position in the late 1990s of publicly accepting climate science while promoting policy delay or policies peripheral to fossil fuel control. Additionally, we find that Exxon, through the International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association (IPIECA), coordinated an international campaign to dispute climate science and weaken international climate policy, beginning in the 1980s. This represents one of the first longitudinal studies of a major fossil fuel company’s responses to global warming to the present, describing historical stages of awareness, preparation, denial, and delay.

TUHO: Podobně postupovala i společnost Elf, která se spojila s Totalem v roce 1999, poukazuje server Franceinfo. V roce 1986 sepsalo oddělení životního prostředí společnosti Elf důvěrnou zprávu, ve které si všímala klimatického rizika. Píše se v ní, že „akumulace CO2 a CH4 (metanu) v atmosféře a skleníkový efekt, ve který ústí, nevyhnutelně promění naše životní prostředí. Všechny modely jednomyslně předpovídají oteplování“. Stejně jako Total i Elf se rozhodl raději klimatickou změnu veřejně bagatelizovat, než změnit své počínání.

Stejně jako zmíněné společnosti si byl i francouzský Total vědom obrovských rizik, která představuje zvyšování teploty spojené se spalováním fosilních paliv, a přesto svými veřejnými prohlášeními opakovaně podkopával důvěru v klimatickou vědu.

„Američtí historici už deset let analyzují strategie amerických společností, které se vyhýbaly zodpovědnosti a oddalovaly regulace na ochranu životního prostředí. Ve Francii jsme ale měli tendenci věřit, že naši šampioni jsou ctnostnější než ExxonMobil. Naše studie přehodnocuje uklidňující příběh, který jsme si vytvořili,“ uvedl jeden z autorů zprávy, Christophe Bonneuil, který je ředitelem v Centru historických výzkumů.

One of the world’s top polluters of atmosphere-altering greenhouse gases has aired nearly 30,000 TV advertisements over the past 15 months, trying to convince people that it is green.
From June 2020 to August 31st of this year, Americans have been bombarded with ads from the California-based oil-and-gas-producer Chevron, according to new data from the analytics firm AdImpact first reported on Morning Consult. During July 2021 alone, the fossil-fuel giant aired 4,402 ads, the data shows.
More than 80 percent contained terms such as “sustainable,” “renewable,” “environment,” and “clean.” In reality, however, Chevron has contributed more than 43 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent into the atmosphere since 1965, data from the Climate Accountability Institute shows, placing it among the most climate-damaging companies on the planet. “The large majority of ads Chevron is airing are touting their shift to more clean energy,” says Rachel Haskin, senior marketing manager for AdImpact.

Bohuzel dodnes nechava falesny obvineni na klimatickejch vedcich, ze fixluji udaje, prinesl jim vyhruzky smrst nenavisti, vcetne vyhruzek smrti a prominentniho klimatologa Philla Jonese psychickej tlak dotahl nedaleko sebevrazdy.
